prednisone and BP | Arthritis Information

Hi all, I am currently restarting my prednisone 10 mg for a short time while the "pain wave" passes. Yesterday my BP was 160/106. I totally freaked out! Usually my Bp is a bit high since I started the RA meds but nothing like this. I have a call into the RA doc and an annual with my GP on Thursday. Please someone help easy my mind!  Thanks  ChrisChrise, please call your GP also.  Your BP is quite high and I'm not sure that 10 mg. of Pred. would cause your BP to suddenly increase to that level.  Where did you have your BP taken?  Make sure someone calls you back today or go to the emergency room.  Keep us posted.  LindyMy BP looked like that when I out grew the regular cuff. If you are fat it might just be your problem too. The right size cuff 'reduced' my bp by 45 points on the upper number and almost 20 on the lower number. When I was on prednisone, I had to be treated for high blood pressure and diabetes.  I don't think they'll put me back on it again, unless it is an emergency.  I went for years going on and off of it, feeling like I was dying.  I guess the problems were that my blood sugar was spiking and dropping.  Some doctors don't check on these things well enough, I guess.  Yes, call your doctor. I developed high blood pressure while on prednisone.  At its highest, it was regularly 150/110.  I am now taking high blood pressure medicine and trying to wean off prednisone and my blood pressure is back down to normal. Prednisone can raise your blood pressure.

I can't stand pred and a year ago told my rd that I refuse to take it anymore. It was a short term fix. The first few days, my eyes felt like they were bulging out, my heart was racing and I didn't ck my bp but I know it had to be sky high. I couldn't sleep. I was a raging witch from hell. My family was ready to tie me up. The next few days, I felt like I had been run over by a dang ole' train. LOL I never had high blood pressure until ra. I now take meds for it.

I know alot of people here take pred but it was just my preference not to take it. FOR ME, the side effects was way too much for my body and mind to handle.

That's just me.

Just an update , I saw my Gp today and my blood pressure was 130/82 I also didn't take prednisone today as my Rhumey said not to take for more than maybe 3 days( for the really bad pain) I really don't know how i am going to stand it when the prednisone is out of my system. Believe me I am no fan of the med but I know it helps.
