Warning for vitamins | Arthritis Information

To-dayīs paper (Swedish) had a large article (2 full pages) about warning for several vitamins! The figures given are what you need per day and in some cases there is a warning about taking too much. If you take more than 0.7 mg vitamin A per day you may get osteoroposis. Women who have had their menopause should not take more than 1.5 mg vitamin A per day. Women donīt need more than 8 mg (men 10 mg) vitamin E per day. It may cause heart failure if you take too much! The risk to die early is very high already if you take 100 mg vitamin E per day. One brand vitamin E recommends 4 capsules a day and then you get 133 mg! Average need is 75 mg per day of vitamin C and 7.5 microgram (note) of vitamin D. The main idea in the article was that you donīt need any extra vitamins if you eat the regular food in Sweden and I think it is more or less the same in all the countries where you all live. They also warn about some multivitamin brands that contain too much of some type of vitamin. They also say that the marketing about extra vitamins isnīt always correct.

I take only Calcichew D3 (1000 mg calcium a day) so I wonīt get osteroporosis. I understand that calcium and D3 is necessary when you take prednisone. The article states 800 mg calcium a day is enough but I am not sure if it is the same limit when you take prednisone.

As many of you seem to try different vitamins or diets to try to reduce pain, I thought I had better tell about these findings.

Thanks Ragnar!

I knew about the VIT E and A. I have heard that it was thought that the reason  a lot of Swedes have osteoperosis is because they eat  a lot of fish which containes a lot of vit A.

Thanks for posting this, Ragnar.  Did they say if there is a risk for taking more Vit C?  Smokers need much more Vit C than non-smokers, from what I understand.  And Vit C helps with healing.  I studied Vit C quite a bit when my husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and have never seen a risk associated with taking large amounts, although it can cause some digestive discomfort.

I took large doses of Vit C with I had heal spers  some 20 years ago.  The health food store told me your body will only absorb what it needs.  That is why I take it through out the day.  500 mg  4 times a day.  I know Iron is dangerous if you get too much.   Thanks Ragner for the information.  Geri

Hi Ruth!

The article only mentions that the daily need for vitamin C is 75 mg. I suppose that means that there shouldnīt be any danger if you take more. They pointed out those vitamins that were dangerous if you take too high doses.

Have a nice Halloween (we celebrate it also in Sweden nowadays)

Ragnar

I had been taking fish oil capsules in the hopes of reducing inflammation.   It says each capsule has 2 I.U.  and two soft fells contain 6 per cent of the daily allowance.  It suggests 2 per day.

A couple weeks ago, I got some Cod liver Oil capsules and they say they have  1250 I.U or 25% of the daily allowance. It suggests one to three a day.

I have been taking 1 with each meal or three times a day.  I have no idea from the description just how many mgs in each capsule.  Guess I will have to look and see just what I.U., or International Units really is.

I have been taking two vitamin C tablets of 500mg of each of vitamin C because I read that it helps heal.  I did read that it isn't stored if not needed.

Thank you for your information,  Mary
