MTX fog | Arthritis Information

I have heard several of you that take MTX talk about "MTX fog".  My daughter takes 10mg weekly and does have "squirrely" days (as we call it), but I never thought it to be related.  Would anyone mind sharing their experience?  Any insight I can have on what she could be feeling like would be helpful.

Also, I started having pain in the upper part of my low back.  It is tender to touch along the spine and my husband says it feels spongy on the side of the spine where it is tender.  No tenderness to the muscles.  How often can RA affect the spine (assuming that is what I may have, anyway)?

I can't speak to your spine issues, but I sure can talk about the MTX brain fog, though it's hard to describe.  It's sort of like not being able to focus on things or concentrate properly.  It's just being "out of it."  My RD switched me from folic acid to Leucovorin and that helped.  I hope your daughter is on something to help counteract the MTX side effects.  Please ask about it if she's not.

Hi KIm when I was on MTX , I would constantly have the fog. I remember trying to talk to my kids about an animal (it was a sheep) and could not for the life of me remember the name. I could describe it but the name eluded me. Funny how drugs work sometimes. I sometimes still feel foggy but the RD says its from the Fibro? I am not sure how that works. Good luck to you and your daughter!

Thanks for the insight.  She is usually my one who remembers EVERYTHING- and she became very forgetful over the summer--totally not like her.    Have a good day!

Kim I have RA in my spine. It's not that often you hear of it and often it's found after years with the disease. RA usually affects the smaller joints first from what I understand.

When my orthopedic spine specialist informed me that RA was the cause of the majority of my back problems I said "I didn't think RA affected the back". He assured me that it did and said I was living proof. My RA medications do make a big difference for me.

I hear of many more here that suffer simular back problems so I guess it's not as uncommon as I originally thought.

I also have RA in the upper spine and neck.  I have been in PT for this problem for quite a while.  It has helped quite a bit.  I also have a TENS unit to help with the pain.

The spine is one of those areas where there isn't too much that they can do.  Eventually there is surgery-but that is obviously risky.  Treatment tend to be medication and pain control.
