I finally got around to purchasing probiotics today as this plaq has taken its
toll on me (at least that is the only reason i can see for yeast infections)
There were about 10 choices which made it much harder to figure out. Are
they all the same? I got natural factors, multi acidophilus with FOS. What is
FOS? It says it has 4 billion active cells. I got it from the refrigerated
section. The print is so small on the label, I cannot read it. Any input as the
which are good and which to stay away from? Also, if doctor writes a
prescription, can it be covered under insurance?

Where's GoGo?  She is the Probiotic Princess!

I knew one of you would know. I just wanted to make sure I get a good one
or one that is known to work well.

Are probiotics just yogurt?  Ok, that's probably a silly question, but that's the best I could figure out from the references I've seen to the topic.

Linncn. There are probiotics in yogurt but I wanted the pill form as milk
products don't agree with me. They come in capsule form. I bought them in
the health food coop in our town but there are so many choices and I cannot
figure out which are which or if they are the same or how much to take.
They really improve gut health especially if you are on antibiotics and I think
the plaquinil is giving me constant yeast infections. Its worth a try and
certainly cannot hurt. Are probiotcis something that would boost your immune system?I don't think they boost which is something we don't want done anyway due
to our hyperactive immune systems What they do do is protect our GI
systems. At the hospital, I have noticed doctors are prescribing them more
and more for patients on antibiotics. They help keep yeast in check and
keep normal levels of the good flora so that yeast cannot take over which is
what happens when the good bugs are killed by the antibiotics. I took
Diflucan but that is just another drug with side effects and once worn off,
the yeast was back again. I also know that people on prednisone are more
prone to yeast overgrowth so that would be another good reason to take it.

 

Lori, can you drink soy milk? Don't know much about probiotics but I tried the Silk Soy chocolate milk and it is sooo good. Better than dairy chocolate to me. And BTW how is is your surgery healing? I've thought about it often, I'm just very forgetful.

Yogurt is the best way to get probiotics, or maybe Kefir.  But for those of us with something already amiss, I think regular amounts of yogurt isn't going to cut it.  At least not for me it hasn't :-( 

I just pushed a thread on IBS back to the top where Milly, GoGo and I were discussing why I think non-APer's should do probiotics.

 I think I'd posted way back that I was having problems with my left knee being swollen, with a huge baker's cyst on the back of it. In early Sept, my rheumatologist tried aspirating the  knee, but could get only 2 cc's. The cortisone helped for about 2 weeks, but I  overdid things and the knee ballooned up again.  It also didn't help things when I'd been without  DMARD's  since the end of June. At that time, I was supposed to be on injectable mtx, but 5 days after the first injection  I reacted badly to the med. By then, we were in California for a 3 week holiday and OMG, so much walking and so much pain.

Well in Sept my dr did the knee aspirating, shot my knee full of cortisone and prescribed Plaquenil. I took the Plaquenil for 21 days, then quit because of the daily cramps & diarrhea  and finally blurry vision, and  itching hands. I called my rheumatologist's office to let her know about the side effects and that the shot didn't last. I saw my dr. on Tuesday Oct. 30. She tried aspirating the knee before injecting the cortisone, but got even less synovial fluid than last time. It's been 5 days now ... I'm just beginning to have better mobility and the knee doesn't look as mushy.  At my appt, we talked about the side effects and  I said I'd be willing to try the Plaquenil again, but this time I'd like to take a probiotic, too. She said it's definitely worth a try  because out of all the DMARD's, Plaquenil's supposed to be the most benign/gentle on the body and given my sensitivity to meds, it may be the best med for me if I can get over the cramps etc. Soooo...  I'm hoping that the Flora Smart will help as it did with the antibiotics.

Sorry for this rambling thread, Lorster!  I've never used the brand you bought, but you can check with a naturopath at a healthfoods store to see if Natural Factors is coated to keep the capsule intact until it passes into the intestinal tract.

I do drink silk chocolate and I love it. It is better than dairy chocolate milk. I
still have a wound on the left side so I have told the hospital I won't be
taking any MRSA patients, lol. I just couldn't deal with that right now. I have
never had MRSA but from what I have read, and seen the places it likes to
live is the armpits, groin, nasal passages and vulva. Ick. I'm scared to death
I'm gonna get it. Where do you get the probiotics?

You can get them pretty much anywhere.  I use the refrigerated brand at Whole Foods.  You can also get the Pearls at WalMart.  You just need to try and get as many different strains as possible and as many live cultures.  Look for the words "Acidphilous" or Multidophilous.

I've used "Biobeads" by Natrol in the past when taking antibiotics for long periods of time.  It seemed to do the trick.  They are enteric-coated so you don't kill 'em all with your stomach acid.

Drugstore.com has Biobeads in stock and on sale.

just taking up space in my gut and indeed might be taking over. It's not
"-dophilus" but a very hardy spore which stomach acid can't kill. Lately
I've been using foods and various brands of probiotics. I make sure the
probiotics are enteric coated.

Lorster, soy milk does not contain probiotics as far as I know. Non-dairy
food sources would be unpasteurised miso (don't boil it!) and
unpasteurized sauerkraut and other unpasteurised pickles. To get pickles
and sauerkraut unpasteurised you basically have to make your own. I
recently purchased the Perfect
Pickler
which makes sauerkraut and pickles in only 4 days!

I was also able to buy live culture miso at the hippie store and I have
some daily. You can't make it too hot so I boil some broth and then let it
cool down to about 104 degrees Farenheit before I make a miso paste
and add it in. It's tasty and it's a good way to use up vegetable scraps (I
make my own broth with scraps).

I still eat daily yogurt and take a lot of OTC probiotic pills. If you feel a
yeast infection coming on, mix the contents of a few pills into a
tablespoon of live culture yogurt and squirt it up there overnight. This
usually heads it off at the pass. But it's still indicative of a larger problem.

My problem is sugar. I just have to stop eating it. Other foods that
exacerbate yeast are yeast (breads, alcohol, vingar, vegemite) and
processed flours.
