I am returning to college in January, and the school requires an MMR. I When i was a baby I had an extreme reaction ( convulsions, high fever) and my pediatretion was able to get me in to grade school without the second dose. Well the shot record were lost (of course) and I am now stumped. The health dept says that the MMR vacinine has changed since 1968 and I should be fine. But I have read that live vac. are not good if you are on a biologic?  Any advice?Hi, live vaccines are out, according to my doctor. Hope you can reaffirm this! Lynda

Can they run a titer on your blood to see if you have the antibodies already from the 1st shot?  If not you can ask for an "excuse" from your physician. Just a Good-morning bump!

You need to go to the RD and have him write an explaination that you CAN NOT have vaccines with live viruses.  By state and National law the University nurse is supposed to accept that.  There may even be a form that he has to fill out, but you cannot take a live virus vaccine...because of the biologic.

As far as your old records.  The school district that you graduated from should have a copy and those records you are entitled to.  Although it is really a moot point b/c you cannot have a follow up vaccine, and that is what they are trying to do.  It happened to me, about the same time I went to the first RD...I got the shot and promptly got pneumonia.  I was so angry, b/c I knew that I would not be able to handle live viruses even without a biologic.

The MMR vaccine is a live vaccine.  NO LIVE VACCINES!!!  And if you are on biologics and/or DMARDS, you can not be around anyone that has had a live vaccine for like 2 weeks.  Live vaccines are to be avoided because we are way susceptible to getting what that vaccination is and getting somewhat worse than normal.   We have such suppressed immune systems, that we can not make the immunity we normally would make when getting a live vaccine.  Plus you do not want your immune system to become over active. That kind of defeats the whole DMARD/Biologic purpose lol.

Just a little side note regarding the pneumonia vaccine.  Every year it is advisable for us to get the pneumonia and flu vaccine (NO FLU MIST THEY PSSSHT UP YOUR NOSE!!!).  The pneumonia vaccine is only 60% effective.  I take those odds every single year.  It is much better to get pneumonia after vaccination because it is not as bad as it could be if you DID NOT get the vaccination.  And yes, I have gotten pneumonia despite being vaccinated.  I still go for that shot every year tho.  We are pretty much in that high risk classification for flu and pneumonia.  So be safe rather than sorry!!!
