Hi, i have a question for everyone one this site, my son has JRA poly he is 5. He takes 7.5mg mxt. Anyway he has bad stomach pains i'm just wondering if this is common with mxt and if there is anything that i can do to help this. Thanks Tammy.

< =text/>_popupControl(); Yes, it is a very common side effect from the mtx.  If it gets really bad, you can always ask the RD for the injectable mtx. It really helps with all the tummy side effects.  I used to take the pills but switched for that very reason.

My daughter also JRA but she is 12.  Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions or just need to talk.

When I was in the pharmacy section at Walmart I noticed that they have Tums for kids. You might just try some with your little one. I know that it helps my tummy, the Tums for adults. Injectible MTX is great but I dont think that it is what your little one would like. Good luck.

Hi, I would be sure he takes it with a big dinner/meal. I never take my pills on an empty stomach. My thoughts are with you with a sick child. It must be hard to have him take the pills knowing he will 'hurt' afterwards

Because he was allergic to 'milk' , dust, choc. other things, my son had them every week. It was hard for him to go. Hard on the mom too.

You are a super mom!!

I'm sorry your child has this, I wish you the best.

< =text/>_popupControl(); RANana..my daughter has JRA and I belong to a board for parents with kids with JRA and most of the kids...including the little ones do injectable mtx because it is easier on their little tummies.  Injecting mtx also means more of the med is also absorbed into the system.  Most little ones can not swallow pills either so they have to inject the mtx.  My 12 year old can swallow pills but still will opt to inject mtx because of the stomach issues and she knows more of the med is absorbed by the body.  There is also a 14 year old boy that opts for the injectable mtx.

Unless you have a child with JRA it is difficult to say what they will or will like.  It is also important to realize whether or not your child likes something has NO bearing on what is best for them.  These kids with JRA get used to getting their shots and many will ask for them when they know it is time for them because they are hurting and they know the shot helps.  It is a shame that this is their lives and getting shots are something they are used to.  Kids with JRA are treated just the same as adults.

I took my meds last night and my stomach hurts this morning. I took them after I ate with a full glass of water but once in awhile this happens. I can still do my chores. It's not too bad but it's there for sure.   I was one of those few people who reacted horribly to the mtx. I was literally doubled over in bed or in the bathroom with a sick stomach. I had to be taken off of it. You really should watch that he's not having some serious reaction to it as well. Not everyone can tolerate it. Good luck.

I've been on it for years now and at times I still have some stomach problems. Some weeks are better than other's but it never surprises me.

Hate the little man has to go through it though. Bless is heart.

In addition to the advice you got about making sure your son eats solid food with the medication, did you ask about letting the dose be split up?  One at breakfast (maybe with some toast) one at lunch, at snack time, dinner and/or bedtime, all with plenty of food.  I don't know what the dosage breakdown is for the children's MTX, but splitting the dose was soooo helpful for me.

I hope you find a solution quickly.  I know this is awful for both of you.
