I quit taking my methotrexate a few weeks ago b/c I got tired of feelign so sick and nauseous from it. I see my rheumy Friday and am going to ask for the injectible mtx. For those taking this via injections, do you have any side effects? What caused you to switch from oral mtx? thanks, Juliafor me the stomach issues went away with injectable.  I did get a bit mor eof a headache but it was liveable

Hi Julia,

My Dr switched me saying that more of the MTX would get in my system (RA not under control) but I must admit that I don't feel near as sick as I did when taking it orally.

Take care

Just went to the RA Doc today for a lump in my throat and being very hoarse. The doc said MTX can cause this I was taking the pills and just two weeks ago started with the shot. Im set to see a ENT Wed my RA Doc set it up because my throat is really bad. Can not tell you if MTX caused this RA Doc may try switching to other meds. GOOD LUCK BILLY

I got so sick from the oral MTX that I ended up in hospital. I switched to the injectables and still have problems. I feel nauseated and ache all over the next day. I am only taking .3mls  (Added Arava and also take Plaquenil) I used to feel sick for 2 days but now it is pretty much over after 24 hours.I need to stay in bed basically 1 day a week. I am close to switching to a biologic but so far I have been afraid to take them.

Anyway, I thought i would give you a few suggestions(although I am no expert!). I take my needle before bed and take half a sleeping pill so I sleep through the worst of it. I take 2 Leucovorin tablets 8 hours after I take the needle. Remember to let the MTX warm to room temperature before injecting or it will sting. The needle taking is no big deal.

Good luck and I hope that you have few or no side effects. I know some people have none. I am telling you about my experience so you don't feel anxious if you do have side effects. They do go away !!!

Hi Juliah, I've been injecting MXT for about a year.  I've been as high as 20mg but am now down to 12.5mg.  I inject early evening and sleep through the worst of the side effects.  The only issue is I'm a little more fatigued the following day but it wears off by afternoon.  Even when I was taking the pill form I didn't have much reaction.  I changed because MXT absorbs better in the inj. form.  Good luck.  LindyI inject too to avoid the stomach upset and to improve absorption. I am currently on 25 Mg, but have taken up to 27.5

I inject late in the day or at bedtime and do not experience any lasting side effects.

Goo luck! HappI never took the oral b/c I have such a sensitive tummy. I did the injectable for about a year and still had mouth ulcers, hair loss, and fatigue. I am just on Humira for now and feel alot better with out the mtx, but if I start having more joint problems I will go back to the mtx in addition. I would never want the oral. There werent any injection related issues with the MTX such as site reactions etc..with the biologics like Humira and Enbrel site reactions are more common. MTX burns a bit going in but not too bad. The biologics really set you on fire. All in all..mtx isnt bad though.
