lied to my rheumy...now what? | Arthritis Information

Hello,

O.k., so back in July alot of bad stuff happened in my home. Septic tank backed up and flooded the basement and two bathrooms, so the house went to heck! My daughter and husband got sick from mold. We had to have "mold doctors" come in and tear out our flooring and some sheetrock.

I just could'nt deal with the side effects of the metrotrexate at the time, and believe me the house is still a mess. I continued all my other meds..plaquinel, relafen, B-12, thyroid, bupropion all the easy on your system ones.

Its been 3 months since I took my methrotrexate and I'm due for a rheumy visit. I really don't want to tell him that I stopped being compliant with the methrotrxate, but i don't know if I should start back at my normal dose of because I remember that I had to build up to it. I'm flaring ...has anyone out there stopped and restarted on thier own and if so how did you handle the dosage??????

Thanks

Oh yeah I want to share my daughters newspaper article. I'm so proud of her.

Haley Ham and her Golden Retriever Sam were inseparable.

Lots of children are attached to their dogs, but this was different. Sam was ... well, like Haley's brother, not the family pet. The two of them explored the nearby creek. And then there were the shows. Sam was entered in almost every local pet show and usually won. It's hard to beat the sheer beauty of a long-haired, smiling Golden Retriever.
One night in March after Sam had spent some time outdoors, he began vomiting and experiencing diarrhea. The family rushed him to the veterinary clinic in Seymour, where everybody knew and loved Sam like the Hams did. After an examination the vet told the Hams that Sam had been poisoned with antifreeze. It appeared Sam ate antifreeze mixed with a stew. After two days of fighting to save Sam, the vet called the Hams and told them to come over to Seymour to say goodbye. Sam was put to sleep on April 1.
Haley was only 10 and not only crushed and saddened, but unaware of what antifreeze even was. But now she does. Haley has become a resident expert on the dangers of antifreeze. She wants a law passed in Tennessee that would require the makers of antifreeze to put a bittering agent in it, to make it less sweet tasting to pets and children who mistakenly drink it.
This is not some idle wish by a grieving child. This has become a true mission. The Sevierville fifth-grader has written letters to virtually every state legislator, the president and members of Congress. She created a poster for a 4-H exhibit at the Sevier County Fair, complete with a petition seeking support for the bill. And she has created an online petition that has begun to attract attention too.
"I want to help the animals," she said. "It was a bad thing that Sam had to go through. He died a terrible death. I want to do something to make sure other children's pets don't die the same way."
Most antifreeze is made colorful and sweet-tasting. Not only can pets and small children be attracted to it and get into it, it can be used by mean-spirited people trying to intentionally poison other animals. The Hams - mother Ginni, father Jim and 11-year-old only-child Haley - are convinced Sam and a neighborhood pet, Jessie the hound dog, were poisoned intentionally. It's become Haley Ham's mission to make sure her beloved Golden Retriever didn't die in vain. Three states have such a law: California, Oregon and New Mexico.
She wants antifreeze to be blended with denatonium benzoate, a bittering agent. Some antifreeze is made safe, carrying brand names like Sierra, Sta Clean and Prestone Low Tox. The law is aimed at the others. It costs pennies to add the ingredient.
Haley's letter-writing campaign drew the attention of State Sen. Raymond Finney, R-Maryville, who represents Sevier County. While most lawmakers she wrote sent back form letters that made no commitment, Finney's was different. The senator had filed a bill in 2006 to require the addition of the bittering agent, only to be visited by a representative of antifreeze makers. The lobbyist's clients favored a federal standard that would apply to all states, rather than seeing each state deal with it. Finney agreed to back off, but has since learned no such federal standard has been adopted. That, plus Haley's letter, made Finney pledge to introduce the bill next year if no federal standard has been adopted.
Haley, who is homeschooled, has had a sense of civic responsibility for a long time. At age 5 she saw a TV show about Locks for Love, the program in which people donate hair to make wigs for children with cancer. She did the same thing. Now she is pushing for a law to make antifreeze less tempting.

I don't know what to advise you about the MTX, except maybe to come clean with your RD, just as you told us here.

What a wonderful story about your daughter--I know you must be very proud of her!  I've had some pets poisoned in the past from antifreeze so I know how tragic that can be.  But it never occured to me to try to change the situation like she is doing.  Wow!

I agree. Talk candidly to your physician and discuss all the options: you owe it to yourself!

Just tell RD... it probably will not be the first time someone stopped taking it for one reason or another. I do not think why you stopped taking it would be considered (in my book anyways) non-compliant.

Now... if ya wanna talk about non-compliant that would be me

but..you should still tell the doc the truth about whats going on..if nothing more than the fact that he should know that the side effects are bothering you that much.

Be honest. It's your choice if you take it or not....but he can't really help you if you aren't honest about things.

I stopped my meds years ago. I thought I was doing fine and I told my doctor I was going to stop. She advised against it and warned me if I did I'd be in horrible shape by the time I realized I was wrong. As much as I hated to admit it she was right and it took a very long time to get me back to where I was.

Your situation is certaily different. You haven't stopped all your meds. You just stopped one that you feel strongly about not taking. Talk to your doctor and see if you can come up with an alternative that you both can live with.

It's always your choice.

The truth shall set you free.I agree with everyone else, the thruth is the best!Your daughter is very special, n wonder you are so proud of her.

yep  just tell him.. "I had a lot on my plate and couldnt deal with side effects.. Im ready to go back on it"  Remeber ultimately its YOUR body and you are in charge of what goes into it..

Its k like my adament attitude that I will NOT take any cholesterol lowering drugs, for fewar that my liver wont be able to handle taht and MTX.. I want my MTX// I want my Maypo!!

Hi Ginni, this is a problem only you know how to solve. Your relationship with your doctor is sooooo important, so i'm sure you'll find a way to tell him/her what you've told us. It is so complex this disease and the meds are hard to take sometimes. Please, follow your heart and I'm sure your doctor will understand. good luck with this, Lynda

Ginni,

Ive' stopped before on my own. I started feeling so good on the meds that i was taking that i believed that i was getting better. It never crossed my brain that maybe the drugs were working as they were supposed to be. About two or three weeks later i am going up the stairs like a gorilla, ooh, ooh, ooh, oooh. Well, i went back on the mtx but, it took about three weeks to kick back in. Now i lower it at 2.5mg and wait to see what effects i get from the lowering. If i still feel good after three weeks, i'll go down another 2.5.

LEV

I agree with everyone else .... just tell him exactly what you said, if that seems too hard, print it and hand it to him

Tell your RD.

Your daughter is amazing.  To turn her grief into an action that will save countless other animals shows not only how compassionate she is, but how mature and intelligent, to think it through and take the necessary steps.  It makes ME proud of her too.  Bless her heart.

Edited to ask:  Antifreeze in stew?  How did that happen?  Was someone trying to poison animals on purpose?

< =text/>_popupControl(); Ginni!!! So glad to see you again sweetie!!  I am so sorry that everything at home was just so insanely hectic!!  I am glad that everyone is well again and the mold problem was taken care of.  (((hugs))) to everyone at your house.

Ok...first of all...UGH...don't stop meds like that cold turkey again!!  Please, like others have said here, be candid and honest with your doctor that you did stop the mtx and want to start up again.  This time with your side effects, call your doc and see what you can do about them.  If they are tummy side effects, maybe consider injecting mtx to bypass the tummy issues.  That is the whole reason I went to injectable and most other people do also.  Besides, with the injectable, more of the med is absorbed in the body and it is also absorbed faster.

Your daughter is just amazing.  What a beautiful article for a very worthy cause.  Congrats to her and to you on that newspaper article!!!!

I am so glad to see you again I missed you!!!
