New Twist on Lemon/Olive Oil Drink | Arthritis Information

I am having a very bad (for me) herx or flare week and so I've hauled out the ol' herx buster remedies. I usually just make my lemon/olive oil drink with one whole lemon, about 1 tbsp olive oil, and water and that's it. I know some people add a lot of other stuff but I find the basic ingredients to be quite palatable.

Well, like I keep going on about, I'm trying to get more supplements from food and as ginger is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties I have been trying to get more fresh ginger into my diet. So I tried adding a big chunk to the lemon/olive oil drink and it's SOOOOOO TASTY.

Regular ginger has a bite, or if you use young ginger the taste is more mild.

The L/OO drink seemed to help a lot yesterday, so I'm really hoping this is  aherx.

Awww.... Gimpy sorry to hear you are herxing.

When I saw this post I was hoping for a good alkie beverage Thanks Joonie...I do have plenty of those other recipes too!

heheheee.... but would alkie be a good thing to add into your lemon & olive oil? Or would the olive oil going to make ya sick?

Hummmm.... now I think I need to do some experiments. I am guessing the olive oil will just sit on top and separate. Or does the acid from the lemon break it up and down?

Joonie, you put the whole lemon with the rind and everything in and the olive oil emulsifies in the blender. Then you starin out the pulp and the resulting drink is this frothy lemony pale yellow drink that's quite tangy and refreshing.

It's actually a liver flush drink. APers use it because a herx is caused by a backlog of toxins in the blood, so the liver flush drink helps clear those toxins out.
Gimpy...I used to actually grind Ginger Root and make  drink. it was bitter and really did nothing for me in the long run but I guess you could try thatCool! It does sound quite good. Can you drink it hot and add a little whiskey? Joonie, you could...not sure how good it would be, though. Gimpy, I'm going to tell my husband about this.  He has a fatty liver and will find this very useful.  He also drinks ginger tea every day for its health benefits.  It wouldnt' hurt me either to try it.  Maybe we'll do it together!  Were the above directions complete or is there something else to know? Jesse, I don't know if it's beneficial for fatty liver but it probably will not harm him as long as he is allowed to consume the ingredients in it.  This is the recipe:

One whole lemon, scrubbed and cut into large chunks
1-2 tbsps cold pressed olive oil
water

Optional (for those who like a sweeter drink)
frozen juice concentrate to taste, and/or stevia or splenda

(there are many variations. Pip adds lethicin to aid neuropathy)

Blend until liquified. Then strain through a fine metal sieve, pushing the pulp down onto the sieve with a rubber spatula to extract more liquid.

Make sure the sieve is fairly fine. Once I used a less fine sieve and the results weren't as pleasant.

Happy L/OO drinking!
Thanks, Gimp, I just told DH about it and he says he gets all those ingredients in different foods and forms every day.  I wonder if it makes any difference if it's in drink form or not, as long as you get all the parts of the recipe.  The lecithin part intrigues me though since I'm having bad neuropathy issues lately.  Thanks for the info. Jesse, no, you can have the parts in food, but I think some of the benefit comes from the lemon rind which isn't normally found in foods.

I mean, basically the drink is salad dressing. It does seem to help the herxing, though!
My mommy puts 2 grated lemon rinds in her Nut roll dough. You can taste the lemony flavor in it too.

Think of the Joker in the original Batman movie.  All the products by themselves were not a problem - but together you ended up looking like Jack Nicholson.  So that's how the WL/OO works -but in reverse.  :-)

I used the Lecithin because on www.keephopealive.org the original recipe had stirring in 1 TBLS of lecithin grains to reverse neuropathy.  I had something strange going on when I first got sick and even had a periphial nerve conduction test done to see if I had MS.  (Didn't)  I truly believe the WL/OO drink with the lecithin reversed that condition.  I mean, it took a few months, but it all went away, Thank God.

If any APer's are lowering doses of meds and weaning, you really should think of starting the WL/OO drink a day or two before hand to help the herx.  I swear it worked for me.  As I've posted many times, I HATE LEMON and had to gag that stuff down, and the only reason I drank it was my hubby MADE me drink it as HE noticed the difference.  I was too busy trying not to hurl.

Yes, that's right, the rind would have benefits that we don't normally get, assuming it's organic or cleaned very very well.  He doesn't eat the rind, so he's missing something.  Jesse, I wanted to move Happ's post to this thread so you wouldn't miss it:
OK...I have mined through part of the wealth of information at the site Pip linked to. This is what jumped out at me
The pectin in the rind of the lemon helps remove heavy metals from the body. It detoxifies the liver and moves lymph. Low body temperature moves toward normal (98.6° F.). This drink may be used daily or less frequently if not needed...
Now, I need to set out on a voyage of discovery---do other citrus fruits have pectin in their rinds...ah the joys of internet travel.

Edited because I am still an idiot when it comes to the formatting of this forum's sotware. Ah, to be removed from ignorance.
Wow, another reference to heavy metals.

Pip

OOOOOOOOKKAY. This is the skinny as I know it! *LOL* the pectin in citrus fruit--all citrus fruits, especially blood oranges and clementines--if found in the layer where the pith meets the rind. Commercially that pectin is removed, freeze dried, combined with some few other ingredients and sold variously as modified citrus pectin with claims that vary from miracle cure to the more realistic "combined with a sensible diet held reduce plaque, reduce cholesterol, and maintain overall well being." There are some small and not very well controlled or documented studies that indicate citrus pectin can be instrumental in maintaining the function and reliability of the pancreas.

My conclusion, after hours of reading is that that fresh citrus pectin levels blood glucose, acts as a broom for the venous and lyphatic system, and aids in digestion while the olive oil, with its antioxidant properties, is a _healing fat_ as well as providing lubrication to the bowels and from there to the skeletal system. As the majority of the fatty acids in olive oil are omega-9 oil, which is monounsaturated, the oil protects the stomach lining from the high concentation of vitamin C found in whole citrus.

This would be so much clearer is I could have only found a single monologue on the subject rather than having to act like a quilter and piece this all together bit by bit...however this design is not nearly as attractive as fabric art.

Grind up that citrus, add the oil and drink to health. I will.

Just a side note,  the lemon and olive oil go together in combination because most of the toxins are fat-soluble and the lemon juice stimulates the gallbladder to secrete bile, (and the liver to release toxins) into the small intestine, where they become trapped and can be eliminated from the body. Seems logical anyways.

You know, I think we have a lot better shot at healing when we 'quilt' our information together than do many of us who rely on one doc to do the work for us.  Most docs study one aspect of health and we see post after post of how they do not communicate with each other, let alone us.

So what happens if you don't HAVE a gallbladder?

My curandera recommended yet another variation:

2 ounces local honey (the more aromatic the better)
2 ounces dark red wine (such as a hearty Burgundy)
2 lemons or three limes or three clementines, or a combination

Puree and then add two ounces extra virgin cold pressed olive oil and blend well. Mix 1/3 puree with 6-8 ounces filtered water three times a day.

Keep unused portion tightly covered, at room temperature, and protect from sun.

Serendipitously, I came across >>this article<< listing the benefits of red wine in treating joint pain...

Many physicians recommend zero alcohol for people taking MTX, others say one or two drinks a month, yet others one or two drinks a week. If you are on MTX speak with your physician before using this honey/wine/citrus/olive oil mixture.

This is really interesting for me.  All of the ingredients are things that anecdotally help us heal.

And I'm sitting here drinking my annual Electric Reindeer wine - so maybe I'm a bit...biased.

I have a question, does this detox make you sick? Does it cause stomach upset or anything?
