Fairly dumb question | Arthritis Information

I haven't taken a multi-vitamin for ages.  The RD'S nurse suggested that I should and said most have 400 milligrams of folic acic.

I bought several kinds, I'm not adverse to returning things!

I finally decided on Centrum which has 500 mcg's of folic acid.

The pharmacist said that was such a minute amount it should make no difference.

What do you think?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Dotty.  Are you taking mtx?  If so, then you probably need a prescription dosage of folic acid.  If not, then the difference between 400 and 500 mcg's isn't that much I think, but someone else here may have more info.I am taking MTX, and I am just wondering if 500mcg's as opposed to 400 which i guess is the standard amount in multi-vitamins is too much?  I am taking prescription folic acid.Hi Dotty, that's not a dumb question at all!  There are no dumb questions.  I think you can trust your pharmacist.  The tiny extra amount shouldn't cause a problem at all.  In fact, if the prescription folic acid you take now doesn't do the job, your RD may give you a stronger version anyway. Hi Dotty,
I'm on mtx and Enbrel and I take 2 mg's of folic acid.

Dotty, I think you may be getting micrograms and milligrams confused.  The amount of folic acid in your multivitamin is only a fraction of the 2 milligrams recommended for folks on MTX.  The nurse apparently was confused as well.

You should speak with your doctor about getting a prescription strength supplement which is measured in milligrams - not micrograms.

Hope that helps!

Hillhoney39398.3406018519Dotty I just looked it up to clarify - a microgram is 1/1000 of a milligram.

Thanks for your replies.  I am taking prescription folic acid.  One milligram I think.

The pharmacist did explain that a microgram was a very tiny amount.

But thought I would just check here.  Now that I'm finally doing something I want to make sure I'm doing it right!

Thanks again.

OK, now I'm confused...doesn't take too much!

Dotty, are you saying you're already taking a 1 mg folic acid prescription each day, and now you are adding a multi-vitamin, and want to make sure you aren't adding too much folic acid by getting 500 mcg instead of 400 mcg out of the multi?  If so, or something close to that, I'd say you're fine.  Like the pharmacist said, that 100 mcg isn't much of a difference either way.

Hope I haven't made it more confusing!

Gosh guys.....I take 2 multivitamins a day butI don't have a perscription for folic acid.

Inner Glow, that is exactly what I'm trying to say.  You clarified it much better.  Thanks for helping!

I think I'm doing okay with the multi-vitamin I chose.  Thanks.

Hi, check on the multi (s) so you know how much is in each one. I take 1mg. part in a multi and part in an over the counter (no perscription) type. LyndaAngy, the usual procedure seems to be to give the patient a folic acid prescription, although I believe there are some here who just buy a large enough dose over the counter.  Having said that, a friend who was on high doses of MTX for breast cancer many years ago was never told to take folic acid (they didn't know it would help at the time) so it's not like it's going to be a very major problem without it.  However, it's supposed to be very helpful and therefore, it's usually prescribed.  I'd talk to your doctor about it. < =text/>_popupControl(); Mtx can cause a rather nasty folic acid deficiency so thhe RD's prescribe 1mg or more per day depending on your mtx dose.  I am on 2mg a day.  It also helps to prevent hair loss and mouth sores from the mtx.

Thank you Jessee!!!! I will talk to him.

Gramma....when you say mouth sores does that include cold sores/fever blisters????? Thanks in advance!! Because I do get a lot of them....as soon as one heals the next one isn't far away.

Hugs
