Hey,

Here I am sounding dumb again but I had been reading older posts and noticed that several of you take advil, Aleve and other OTC drugs for pain...I thought you shouldn't take these if you take Methotrexate....that is what the insert in my MTX says. Can you help clear this up for me...PLEASE!!!!!

Hi Delena,

I have heard that too and I asked the pharmacist about it.  She said it would probably be ok to take it like 2 days after taking the methotrexate but not the day of or maybe not even the day after. I dunno, I have stopped taking it for 6 weeks now but I'm a scaredy cat anyways.  So I too was wondering just how safe it was as well.

I asked/told my RD about taking aleve... he said it was fine... now i  dont take it WITH my meds normally.. usually as a night time relief type thing....Aleve is actually a low dose of naproxen and i was on that drug when i first started out with RA. Naproxen (or naprosen) alone was not enough for me.

I dont know about advil etc... i take aleve 99.9% of the time. I took tylenol pm a few times, but i dont like how i am groggy in the morning, guess i didnt get enough sleep on them...

Hope this helps.

I've taken Advil in pretty high doses for the longest time. My doctor is aware that I use it verses lots of precription pain medications and I take 22.5mg of MTX & Humira weekly. He hasn't pulled the alarm as of yet...but keep in mind my doctor might be a little more liberal than some doctors out there. He sees no fear in the occational glass of wine that I love so much either.

I doubt it's good for me. All these NSAIDS precription or not are hell on our stomaches...liver and kidneys. I take them 4 at a time which is the same as precription strength. I buy the generic brand in the huge bottles...it's really cheap!

I'm not advising it...just reporting my reckless behavior.

If you can do without it....I think I would for sure.

For  years I've taken MTX and naproxen at the same time. It wasn't until a few months ago the pharmacist at Publix told me about the warning..I told them I've done it for years and they shrugged it off I was never warned about this.  My doctor recommends Aleve and Tylenol for Arthritis for my headaches.  I am on mtx.my rheumy said no

And your the one that's in constant pain after 15 years; am I right Nanny?

I'm not saying it's 100% safe; but there comes a point where you have to choose in my opinion. I'd certainly risk it before I'd suffer constantly.

There's lots of medications out there that can help us. Do they have side effects? Yes. Do that have horrible side effects? Yes.

Do they make life worth living? Yes.

I won't spend the rest of my life wishing I could do more when there even the outside chance I can do something that can help me get off the side lines.

If you've been seeing the same doctor for an extended period of time with little to no results I personally would seek a second opinon.

Thank you all so much....sometimes it is just all so confusing and overwhelming, you don't know what to take or not take. I did decided to stop taking Celebrex because I developed awful tummy problems, so I need a little something for pain once in a while. Tried Tramadol and it made me very sick, so forget that. I may try Aleve for the pain...thanks so much

You all are great and sure a help!!

The reason my doctor has given me, as to not taking Ibuprofin or Asprin (Tylenol is ok) is that I am on Methotrexate and I am also on a non-steroidal anti- inflammitory.  The combination of those would not work well with asprin or Advil.  It would be too much for the liver/kidneys- not sure which one.  I think it depends on the meds you are taking.  Ask your Rheumy- and do what they say.
