any birthday ideas | Arthritis Information

because i'm on mtx my rd told me that i'm not allowed to drink any alcohol at all ever and my 21st birthday is in april and i'm kinda stuck on what i should do for my bday. I won't go to the bars because i'm not going to watch all my friends get drunk on MY 21st so i can play dd.

i'm starting to think about it now because i had a suggestion to go on a weekend vacation but none of us have any money and i would feel really bad asking a few of my friends to go broke to celebrate (were all in college.)

anyone have any ideas? I would really appreaciate it. thanks so much.

Jessica, I understand how important it is to take care of your body especially with meds like mtx, but have you asked your RD if you could have just 1 drink on your b-day?  I know different drs have different opinions, and maybe for a special occasion he would ok it, as long as you know how to stop.

You should definitely be able to have some fun on your 21st.  Drinking was never that important to me, but we all have our own ways of feeling like we've made some important transition on our b-days.

What about going to a mexican restaurant/bar and having non-alcoholic frozen margaritas, or other drinks that aren't so dependent on the alcohol?  As a gift, your friends could agree to all drink non-alcoholic too.  And mexican food is fun stuff.  Or how about a karaoke place?

What about other 21+ activities like gambling (if you have any nearby) or a comedy club?  Or can you find a weekend vacation that's not too expensive?  Maybe something local where you can all bunk together?

So how soon is your b-day?  I'm sure you and your friends can find something fun to do.

I have had a couple of drinks here and there and believe me, the next day I pay for it something fierce. MTX gives me a general hungover feeling anyways, so I have to make sure I drink plenty of water. It's really not worth feeling extra-crappy the next day in my opinion. I know there are times for exceptions though.

If drinking is not an option and money is tight... hmm... Where in the states do you live?

well i'm on mtx, plaq, sulfa, and mobic...all of which are metabolized in the liver, and i also don't weigh alot so she said none at all ever. i'm ok with not drinking if that means i'm going to be realitively healthy again.

I love the idea of frozen non-alcohol but i'm afraid i'm going to get sad because i can't have the real thing....idk maybe i'm being to sensitive about it i have been drunk pleanty of times but i've never been in a bar before...i look like i'm 12 and fake id's have never worked. however the casino idea is really good (thanks innerglow!)

i'm in upstate ny, so we have a lot of places we could go but even though i know my friends would spend all they have to celebrate, i don't want them to. they are amazing and increadably supportive and they have already said they wouldn't drink if i couldn't, but part of the problem is only two of my friends will be above 21-so its making it a little trickey. and i know that what ever we do everyone will have fun but i'm stuck on what exactally to do.

I had to ask my hubby as I've never been to upstate NY (he used to live out that way). He suggested a trip to Niagra Falls. When he said that, I thought about Canada. Is that too far for you? I've never been, but I'm sure they've gotta have something to offer.

A girly day would be nice. Spa pedicures are awesome!! (That's my guilty pleasure when we have extra cash.) I like Suzanne's suggestion of a comedy club. Do you guys have a dueling piano bar?? Those types of places are soooo much fun - no drinking required! It's a comedy/karaoke bar in one!!

How about a slumber party? Perhaps at a hotel that has an indoor pool/hot tub? Order in pizza/chinese/whatever, go swimming, hang out in the hot tub, rent a movie, stay up and chat all night long... My girlfriends and I used to love to get away for a ladies' night and chatter until the wee hours of the morning.  Sometimes we would have a few drinks, but it certainly wasn't the focus of the evening. thanks! i love the girls night, and spa idea.... we were thinking about canada origionally (its only about a 3-4 hr drive) but you need a passport and there is a 8 month waiting list in our area because its only been put into place for less than a year...thank you so much for the ideas...i think i was just getting worried for nothing, there were lots of things that i didn't think of!  thanks so much, you have made my night!Sorry to hear you can't partake on your birthday but the mtx is so harsh on your liver that any added strain, such as with alcohol is risky.  How about a spa trip? Do you live anywhere near a nice hotel or casino? Maybe a day spa is nearby... you and some friends can get mani's and pedi's, do a facial or a massage... Make the day about pampering yourself not about clouding your brain with booze.... don't get me wrong I love a good jag every now and again but if you can't... make the best and think about the crappy aspects of drinking, hangovers, blackouts, beer goggled hook-ups you realize are hideous the next day not about the fun stuff that can happen with a few cocktails. I"d take a full body massage over a Darquiri any day! Happy Birthday!!!!!

You could spend the time with your parents and brothers and sisters in an adult non-alchoholic setting. Some equate 21 to being grown-up and many people equate alchohol consumption to being grown up. Many people equate alchohol as the number one drug problem in the world.

Here's a birthday song for you to listen to. Happy birthday.

Hey Jessica  I live very close to the ny/ontario boarder and there is no passport requirement til 2009 when travelling by car. We enjoy Niagra Falls ALOT!

Ditto to what everyone elses is saying.. I am in Upstate too, and zip into the falls about every 3 months. no passport for now, but I'd suggest ordering one as a birthday gift to yourself.  having mine made me feel like a real adult.

I like the idea of a spa day or a casino. Your friends  want you to enjoy your bd, and they know you cant drink. and honestly if only 2 are over 21,  maybe a bar isnt the best place to go ..

Have a great time whatever you end up doing...

thanks again for the suggestions and responces. niagra sounds like a good trip to take, and there is a casino (non alcoholic) that we could all go to that offers the spa stuff...so i think that might be the best plan and a lot of fun...i can't believe i didn't think of it!

thanks for the birthday song lev! and yes alcohol can be very addicting espically among the population that has a genetic predisposition to addiction.

i don't want anyone to get the wrong idea and think that i love to drink or i get drunk all the time because that is deffinatly not the case. and like i said i'm ok with having my health over a drink any day. its more of a right of passage in a sense.

thanks for all the support!
