Abdominal Pain - MTX ? | Arthritis Information

Share

Hi,

I was diagnosed with RA earlier this year and was started on Methotrexate in August, I take 10 mg on Wednesdays (5mg Folic Acid on Tuesdays)

I have had no serious side effects, in the beginning I used to have some cold symptoms a few days after I took MTX and a sore throat but that went away after some time.

Since Friday (Monday today) I have had lower abdominal discomfort (no upset stomach etc) just ab pain as if I would have done some serious work out and it's not going away, I wonder if this could be linked to MTX or my condition?

(I take no other meds than the above, no painkillers et)

Looking forward to your comments

Are you taking MTX in pill form? If so, that may be the cause of your pain. It's pretty common to have pain, or an upset stomach from the pills. You may want to start doing the injections instead.

Regardless, I would say give your doctor a call anyway - better safe than sorry. I know one of the big things with MTX they always tell you to go straight to the ER for is chest pain. So if you feel that pain moving any higher, I'd say go in. Or at the very least call your docs office and ask their advice.

Good luck!

Hi and welcome!  I hope we can be of assistance to you during your RA journey.

Your post came at an interesting time.  I took my MTX (20 mg.) yesterday and last night had some stomach cramping.  This doesn't usually happen, I used to just get really tired and foggy and feel crummy for a while. I'm still not sure it's the MTX, my pants just might be too tight as I sit at the computer.  (Yeah, I've gained a couple of pounds, I admit it).  Anyway, if it continues, I'd try splitting your dose throughout the day and take it with food.  Taking it just before bed is a good idea too.  I usually split up some of the pills during the day and take the last four at bedtime.  Until this time it worked great, but again, I think it was just tight pants. LOL

Hi again, thanks for your replies.

I am on 10mg (one tablet) per week and I havent had any problems since I started, I normally take my tablet after dinner and in the evening. Will get in touch with RA nurse if Im not better soon. Got no upset stomach, just the discomfort/pain - in particular on the left side. Fingers crossed.

LOL @ Jesse888 your comment re tight pants haha...
