Michigan was the 26th state in the USA; it became a state on January 26, 1837.

I hope you were kidding about snow tomorrow.  Not ready for that.  Ever.

Linda,

I'm not kidding. I guess the large amounts will be north and closer to the west coast, 6-10 inches (lake effect snow) but I think we may get 1-3 inches here by us. How can you not love the first snow????

Look at Lake Michigan on the west coast. Did you know that you can take a ferry with or with-out you car from Michigan across the Lake Michigan over to Wisconsin? Cool, isn't it?

LEV

Oh boy, we are driving 4 hours up north tomorrow am!!!  I hope it waits until we get there! We had our snow on Friday evening, dumped 8 inches overnight. But it warmed up yesterday and is a balmy 37 degrees in southcentral Alaska @ 9am. To Grandmother's house we go this afternoon and will only have to battle high winds around Turnagin Arm. No white out conditions, no icy hills, just 200 miles of wet pavement, my kind of driving weather.

Another reason I love the first snowfalls is because i get to see all of those drivers with their suvs crashed into snowbanks, concrete barriers, ditches, medians. They seem to have the mentallity that 4 wheel drive equals invincable. Drive safe everybody. Fourty three thousand people are killed in the United States every year in vehicle accidents, that's a lot of tears by loved ones. Seventy percent of those deaths can be attributed to wreckless and/or aggressive driving according to the NTSB. Fourty three thousand is a lot of people, isn't it? Anyway, drive safe and look out for those that don't, please.

Isn't Michigan cool?

Is Michigan cool?  Nope, it's freezing cold. For 7 or 8 loooong grey months.

But Happy Thanksgiving anywayYou are probably getting our leftovers... it was NASTY here last night!  Freezing rain, snow, high winds... I was so worried one of my blue-hairs was going to break a hip in the parking lot after Bingo! I don't know Lev.  I just wasn't made for snow.  The only good thing I can think up about winter is that my pop stays cold when I leave it in the car.  Hey ! I'm from Michigan too!!! I don't live there now but my family all still does ..theres NO place like Michigan ..
and don't forget to add  this to your facts about the great state..
people who live in the U.P. are called upers (pronounced youpers)
and correct me if I am wrong but I believe it has the most amount of coastline of any state in the union .
also the most registered boaters and ....
is one of  top three states with the most registered hockey players.
not to mention they have the RED WINGS!!! yay !!! and theres no better game to watch than a U OF M football game !
and how bout those cherries !!!and fresh lake fish!
sigh... I miss Michigan..glorious snow and all
happy thanksgiving!

OMG I use the car as a soda cellar too!!! Gotta watch when it gets much below zero, or those cans will blow!!!!

Michigan winters aren't 7 months long. I know that by about mid February it seems like 7 months from warm but March sarts warming and April and May, everything blooming, blossoming and falling in love.

Yep True, What a wonderful state Michigan is. I know plenty of scandanavian yoopers, yah. No correction needed.

No snow today. I wish that the meteoroligists would figure a way to be more accurate in their 24 hour predictions. Oh well, it can't be long before I'm trenching thru the snow, gotta love the first big snowfall.

We had a light dusting of snow here in central IL this afternoon/evening. It is pretty and it puts me in the holiday mood. I hate to drive in it only because of other people (like someone said) especially the ones in SUV's think it's the Indy 500.

Yesterday was sunny and in 70's, today cold, snowy in 30's. That's IL weather for ya!

Lev, I'm going by temp, not by the calendar. Mi weather is, in my opinion, not nice for at least 7 months.  From the end of September till late May or early June.  I really only really love 3 months out of the year, but can tolerate happily a couple more.

Linda,

We need to get you some Michigan rose colored sunglasses.

Hey...........somewhere in one of those lakes is Madaline Island......anyone heard of it? We went on one of our across WI and MI trips one year. I LOVED that island!
Hey...........somewhere in one of those lakes is Madaline Island......anyone heard of it? We went on one of our across WI and MI trips one year. I LOVED that island!
Hi there!
Madeline Island is in Lake Superior (my personal favorite ), it is one of the Apostle Islands.
there are  22 Apostle islands with  12 miles of Beautiful shoreline and they have  more lighthouses than any other coastline in the United States.( cool eh?!)
Madeline Island is the 22nd Apostle Island. It is the only Apostle Island with permanent residents.I guess it was named by early jesuits who thought there were only 12 islands.
Every kid growing up in Michigan learns that they live in a mitten and that Lake Superior looks like a wolves head.
well there you go a geography lesson ! :-) cheers!
Sweet! I LOVED that place! It was like a whole different country! We rented scooters and rode the whole way around! FUN!Now I really want to visit Madaline Island.  But maybe not in the winter?
