Does anyone have any special plans for Thanksgiving? Turkey or Ham?
Anything exciting happening? We are staying home and I am cooking.
Turkey and Ham (gotta please everyones taste buds) I hope everyone has
a very happy, healthy, pain free holiday. We are leaving this afternoon to drive to my Mom's for Thanksgiving, have done this for 30 years. She does all the usual Turkey stuff. SIL brings salad, one year she brought 5, for about a dozen people?, she left in a huff when the salad jokes started. I'm taking a pumpkin roll for dessert and smoked salmon dip and will help my mom tomorrow morning get the dinner going. Sleeping in a strange bed is never a good thing for me, but my mom loves having us, she talks nonstop the whole time and it wouldn't be Thanksgiving without this ritual.

I love to hear ya'll's Thanksgiving traditions.

We are going to my sister's, both of us will be cooking...we'll have from 12 to 14 family and friends. Our menu is

Turkey, Dressing, and Gravy...Dinner Bell Ham, mashed potatoes, green beans, broccoli casserole, mac and cheese, pea salad, fresh creamed corn, sweet potato casserole, cranberry relish, rice, yeast rolls, and deserts....pumpkin pie, coconut cream pie, and red velvet cake! Then we all OD from starch overload, take a nap, then put up the Christmas tree.

(everyone gets their favorite side dish on Thanksgiving.)

This year we are going over to my dads house.  His gf, her daugher and her bf, and son will be there along w/ my grandfather, uncle and cousin will be out from Ohio.  So this year it will be small compared to what Im used to.  My mom side of the family we have between 20-25 people.
Food wise, Im not sure exactly what my dad and Amy (his gf) are making but I'm sure turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn.  We are bringing greenbean casserole.  Other then that Im not sure what we will be having.  My grandma on my moms side always makes 2-25lb turkeys, 2 kinds of stuffing (one w/ sausage and one w/o), sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, greenbean casserole, OMG there is so much more stuff that she makes now I am drawing a blank LOL
Last year, my aunt invited 2 people to the house for dinner that are regular customers at her restruant that dont have family around anymore.  It was really cool. And there are always TONS of desert too.  *my favorite

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Turkey, stuffing, mashed sour cream potatoes, fruit salad, homemade cranberry relish, corn, salad, rolls, and pistachio cream cheese pie. I am sorry but I don't do take out hehehehehI am cooking here for my family.  I have 3 of my siblings and their families coming from all over the northwest.  My mom, great aunt, MIL and FIL along with my SIL and family.  We also invited the family down the street since they don't have family in the area.  3 of our 6 kids will be here PLUS our new daughter in law (our son is serving in Iraq)  Whew, I am already tired! I have already printed the menu so here it is. Off to make the pies

this year i'm working from 7pm to 11pm so i get to go have turkey off the bird not reheated later that night!

i have to work at least 4 hrs on all holidays (it was part of my job requirement because were the only 24hr dinner open on all holidays for about 30-40 miles around) and we get sooooo busy. my boss is really good about tring to work his schedual around everyone's holiday but usually i'm stuck working in the middle of the day....we go down state to my nanas house (moms side) but if i work during the day i can't go so i end up picking up extra hrs because its good money and i would have missed dinner anyway and i figure why not help someone else have dinner with their family

i hope everyone enjoys their holiday and to those who don't celebrate thanksgiving i hope you enjoy your day as well

My family tradition is to sit around and attempt to make Gingerbread cookie houses after the big meal. You would be amazed at what Uncle Carl comes up with after he has had his Wild Turkey!

Off to my brother's house.  We have a total of 10, and yet all of this food:  Turkey, mashed potatoes, candied yams, butternut squash, turnip, onions, stuffing in the bird, stuffing out of the bird (I won't eat it if it's cooked inside, lol) peas, corn, rolls, relish tray, gravy, homemade cranberry sauce, apple pie, pecan pie, maple walnut cheesecake, cranberry squares, brownies, homemade hot fudge sauce, homemade butterscotch sauce and ice cream.  Of course there are cheese and crackers, pepperoni, chips and dip, and about 3 or 4 hot horderves beforehand.  UGH...pass the pepto.

The only thing I'll miss is the big ol' martini pre-dinner and the multiple yummy wines with dinner.  Hhhmm, or the grown-up coffee after.  Wah.

Now, heres a question for you.  How do you guys make sweet potatoes?  Do you make them with brown sugar and marshmellows or do you make them like you would a baked potato?

T-minus 7 hours till I get to eat lots of yummy food!!! My dad is an awesome cook and my uncle who is there is an awesome cook as well along w/ my dads gf.  My cousin is in college for hotel management and something else but shes had to take a bunch of cooking and wine classes.  Shes a good cook as well!!!  YUMMY

Sweet potatoe....we boil until fork tender, peel, slice in half lengthwise, and fry in brown sugar and butter.  I toss in a little kahlua also.  My family can't live without them...I can though, I can be happy with squash and turnip...yum.

Enjoy your day everyone.

Shannon. I also boil them, then peel. Place in baking dish and add butter,
brown sugar, marshmallows and salt and pepper. Debrakay, it is nice to see
other ways to prepare these. My mom is making them this year and I may
try your recipe next time I make them. Kahlua sounds interesting.I hated sweet potatoes as a kid..but now I  LOVE them!!!! now do you guys make your own stuffing?  My grandma makes her own w/ cut up pieces of bread.... Shannon~ I make a really good sweet potato casserole with a crunchy topping or I peel, slice in 1/4 inch slices and fry them in a heavy pan with butter, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg...they "caramelize"" and are kind of sticky/chewey. They are yummy! Happy Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!!!

Oh, the great stuffing controversy!  I'm very fussy about my stuffing.  I boil the giblets and use that along with warm broth, and eggs, lots of sage and a combination of dried out bread slices and bread crumbs to make my stuffing.  I make a lot of it, fill the bird and then the remainder is baked in pans and sliced.  That's my favorite, especially the day after Thanksgiving, where you can just grab a piece of stuffing (or dressing) and go!  I like the crunchy edges too, Mona!

My SIL's like to use other stuffing recipes, and boy does it cause a lot of discussion.  One SIL made an Indian stuffing that had cranberries in it and my husband and his brother nearly staged a riot.  My other SIL makes a Portugese sausage stuffing, that I must say, is just gross!  But that is what is tradition for her family.  Tradition is what the holidays are all about.

We always make the sweet potato casserole with the marshmallows on top - my hubby's family makes it with raisins in it, my family always made it with chopped walnuts in it.  This year I'm not making it - we'll see how much trouble it causes. . .

Instead I am trying out Rachael Ray's butternut squash with fresh thyme and parmesan.

Aw, you guys! This all sounds so wonderful!! I feel like a slacker cause we bought instant everything (even sweet potatoes!!)  I just don't have enough space in my kitchen or the pots and pans to cook in. Plus, trying to cook all that and watch a 9mo old would be crazy....

And yet again, you guys are making me hungry!!! Can I come over??
