Injectable MXT Question | Arthritis Information

Gobble Gobble

Hello I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving.  After all the problems with the MXT last week with the DR's being away and the pills making me so so sick they gave in and wrote the prescription for the injectable.  About two maybe three months ago I posted asking questions about dosing and someone I don't remember who ( sorry) posted a link with wonderful instructions.  If the person who posted that link reads this please re post the link it was really informative.

I had another question as well my Dr's office told me once I fill the prescription  to fill as many needles as I can with my dose and then to store in a dark place.  Is this what everyone dose it seems rather odd.  She said I need to do this because there is not preservative in the MXT and if I keep filling needles weekly it will get contaminated.  Any thought ?????

I had a shot today by the nurse I guess I will do it my self next week I'm sure it can't be any worse than  50 mg of Enbrel twice a week.  At least I will not lose 1- 1/2 hrs of my time each week going to the Rheumy's office and all the gas it took. Thanks for the advice and info have a wonderful day don't eat to much.

< =text/>_popupControl(); Congrats to you on doing the injectable.  I really feel you will be better off side effects wise with the injectable.  It is really easy to do (my 12 year old daughter usually does my injections for me) and it does not burn at all.

I might have been the one that posted that link for you and here it is again for you  http://www.rheumbook.com/rheum_info/med_info/METHOTREXATE_IN JECTION_SHEET.htm

I bought a box of 100 syringes.  It was like at Walgreens.  I'm sure you can get them cheaper at Walmart or Target.  I found this to be easier than buying syringes for a month at a time.  It's just with my RA fog it is easier for me I should say to have the box of them instead of always having to remember to get syringes with a mtx refill.

Good luck and let us know how things go side effects wise for you!!!

That was the link thank you so much.   I lost a lot of my files that were saved in my favorites and this was one of them.  Does your MXT have a preservative my Dr said they don't have one in it?  I am going to fill it this next week and start on Wednesday I am not looking forward to it as I am a little freaked out by needles and I think I have suffered from a bout of amnesia since stopping Enbrel.  I guess I will have to bite the bullet so to speak and just start all over again maybe I can teach my 17 year old daughter wait she can't even make her own bed right LOL. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Good Luck, Linda.

I use methotrexate with preservative in it.  I get it from my mail order pharmacy, but I've also found it at Walgreens.  It comes in a 2 ml. vial, so I only get two doses per vial.

The vial says "contains preservative, cytotoxic agent" in red letters.

When I was using the larger vials of the preservative-free kind, I was told to keep it in the refrigerator, and only use 3 doses before discarding.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Ellie

Morning, everyone! I have a box of the 50mg vials. They last for several injections. I wasn't given any instructions on how to store it though. Right now it's just in one of the kitchen cabinets above the stove with all the other meds. I don't think it has a preservative in it; there's no writing stating so. We got a box of syringes from Walgreens as well. The needles are small and painless (as long as you don't tense up

I'm glad you're able to try out the injectable, Linda! You shouldn't feel as sick as you did with the pills this way. Happy Thanksgiving! May you have a comfortable day! < =text/>_popupControl(); I store my box of syringes in my bathroom closet and haven't had any problems with them at all.

The needles can be a little intimidating at first but you will get used to them and actually look forward to your shot because you know it will make you feel better.  Over on my parents board that I go to for support for parents with kids with JRA, one of our little ones...she is 3...asks for her shot weekly. And yes, you can teach that 17 year old to inject you lol.  My 12 year old does my shot and she can't make her bed either...or pick up anything off the floor for that matter.  I swear the floor by her bed is booby trapped to get me so I can't wake her in the morning for school lol.  The kids get a perverse pleasure out of poking us with a needle lol.  Just ask her one day if she wants to do it and I bet her eyes will light up like Chirstmas tree lights lol.

I store my mtx in the fridge and have not had any problems with it at all whether it is the stuff with or without preservatives in it.  I use my stuff without preservatives in it for 2 injections (I'm on a pretty high dose and all I get is 2 injections from the 50ml vials) and haven't had an issue with it.  Just make sure you wipe the top of the vial off with an alcohol wipe (the part where you put in thhe needle to draw out the liquid) before you use it.  And remember to alcohol wipe the area on your body that you are going to do the injection.

I came across that website one day just messing around and doing some google searches.  Love that site for myself and people that are just starting out doing their own injections.  My hubby read over it too when I started injecting for when he does my injections.  Poor guy turns white as a sheet when he has to do them so Danielle does them most of the time.  I also had her look over the site when she started doing my injections.

Good luck hunny and let us know how it goes for ya!!  We are rooting for ya that your first time doing it will be a breeze!!!  I know it will be!!!!
