Arava, Hair Loss and Biotin | Arthritis Information

I have been taking Arava since January.  I noticed several months later in July that my hair was falling out and about 1/4 to 1/3 had fallen out by the end of August.

When I told my Rheum. he said he recently learned that a high dosage of Biotin will counteract Arava (which does not allow for normal levels of Biotin to absorb).

I noticed within several WEEKS that I had new baby hairs growing all over!  My hair dresser noticed, too.  So, three months later, my hair has really filled out and I am thrilled!

I am surprised that I have not seen anyone else on this forum write about this.  I live in Switzerland, so maybe this is something that is not widely prescribed in the US?

Has anyone else had an experience similar to this while taking Biotin? I take Biotin to help both my hair and nails grow. It really works well for me!Isn't biotin one of the few nutrients actually found in corn?  I knew there was a reason I love corn. Is  biotin something you buy as a supplement or script? You can purchase it in the supplement aisle, either alone or in combination with other vitamins (usually with the B-complex stuff)
I tried Biotin with Arava and it didn't seem to make any difference. Maybe I wasn't taking enough. I stopped taking Arava a few weeks ago because I was losing a tremendous amount of hair. I'll have to check and see how many milligrams I was taking. I've been in more pain since I've stopped Arava.

Biotin was mentioned some time before last October, and I tried it, it did nothing for my thinning hair while I was taking it. BUT when I stopped taking it a month later I had baby hairs and they kept growing for like a couple of months.

It is weird how some things work on me. You would think my hair would grow while taking the Biotin, nope stop taking and saw results. Joonie, sometimes supplements can take months to kick in, just like some meds. Maybe it was finally starting to work when you quit taking it. How long did you take it for?

Seems like a month or so. I did not mean to stop taking it, but when I went out to california last october, I only took the meds I NEEDED with me so we would not get held up for airport security. and when we came back home, I just did not resume taking it.

We sprinkle biotin on our Spring Hare's food.  She eats corn every night too.  I must say, she does have a lovely, healthy coat
