bruising problem? | Arthritis Information

Anyone have problems with bruises appearing spontaneously? These are not normal bruises, they are almost black and odd shapes and I would have to work hard to injure myself in some of the places I get them. They do not hurt at all. Got 2 more just before Thanksgiving and I would go to the dr Monday, but they are now starting to look more like a normal bruise as they are fading a bit. Seems I have some goofy new thing every month.

Yes - at first I thought it was a coincidence that the bruising started around the same time as the really bad symptoms.  There's no explanation for the bruising whatsoever as I've not played hockey in over half a year now.  The bruising is as you described it - very black, odd shapes and in places you'd not normally bruise.  I'm still not sure there's a link, but it is mysterious.  In the last three months I've had about five significant bruises that I can't explain.   unexplained bruises are not normal. i would make an appointment to have
them checked out. you are obviously having some bleeding into your
tissues. with the meds you are on, could be a side effect. see your doctor
about this to rule out anything serious.

i totally agree with lorster, low plts and some anemias can cause brusing like that (both of which can be a side effect of some meds) please get those looked at on monday and see what your lab results say.

Interesting, the one test that did come back positive was for anemia - the only med I'm on right now is the pain killer.  I'll let my doc know next time I'm in.  Thanks. I also agree that you need to see your doctor and have some bloodwork done.

Laker,

Many medications can cause "easy bruising" and one of them is prednisone. I remember when I used to bruise easy after first starting prednisone, I would get a large ugly bruise from smacking a mosquito. I only search prednisone, yu may want to search your other drugs and diseases, just enter the drug or disease and easy bruising. Anyway, here is some info from John Hopkins:

Easy Bruising
Prednisone also causes “thin skin”. Patients on moderate to high doses of prednisone often notice that they bruise easily, even with only slight trauma. Pictured below is a patient with giant cell arteritis who suffered a skin laceration after she struck her leg against a chair.

Laker, I'd definitely get a hold of your doc to have that checked out. It might be a side effect from one of the meds, like Lev suggested. I haven't noticed that I bruise easily myself, but I have noticed if I do get a bruise it heals a lot slower than it used to.

Hope you're bruise-free soon! [QUOTE=levlarry]

i had that problem when i started my daily dose of pred, when i called my dr he lowered my dose and i have been better since.  my gums were bleeding more than normal too.  def get that checked out!

Yes, my dr thinks it is from bleeding under the skin. I have an appt Thursday. In the meantime, my neuropathy has suddenly worsened and spread and my hands are swelling Waiting to hear from the neuro on all that. I see more prednisone in my future there is nothing else I know of that we have left to do to control the vasculitis. Oh well.

Laker- My son gets bruising for no apparent reason, he saw a haematologist and his clotting factor was low. I get bruising as well especially when I have flares and also out of the blue. I also get skin rashes which my doctor thinks could be vasculitis, I am see my RD about it next month. I hope you get this sorted out

Take care

Hey, Laker! You're appointment is this Thursday, right? Let us know what the doc says. Hope you're having a comfortable day!
