OT: Enbrel injection site | Arthritis Information

Yeah, I posted this as an off topic.

It seems like everyone is busy dealing with the bullsh*t of "drama on the boards" instead of supporting, encouraging and helping people with their questions related to RA.

I have read people calling each other names, talking down to one another and basically treating each other like crap. This is NOT what I am on here for!!

I do enjoy the daily chat. It's nice to see how everyone is doing on a day to day basis and chatter like old girlfriends, that's fine. I know there are people who enjoy political chatter and that's fine as well. I get a kick out of most of the OT banter and believe it's nice to talk about things other than just our RA. That's all fine and dandy.

What isn't fine is the bullsh*t that's going on regarding a certain member or members, and the arguments back and forth about a difference of opinion.

I am absolutely, positively, 110% certain that the new people that join AI looking for hope are completely turned off by the grade school like crap that goes on.

Now, let bygones be bygones. Know that not everyone is going to agree with what you say. You have the right to your own opinion and that other person has a right to theirs whether it be the same or not. Agree to disagree!

Ok.

I think I'm done with that now.... so on to my REAL question.

For anyone on Enbrel long term, how long was it before the injection site reaction (red, swollen, bruising, itching) stopped? Is this something that I'm going to have to deal with the entire time I take the med? The bruises on my legs never seem to heal or if one site does, it's time for another dose. Add to that the MTX injection and I look like I get beaten on a daily basis. Aw Mel :( I'm sorry.

I dunno about the injection site....I know alot of people have the same problem you do. I think if you ice the spot you're going to inject, it helps. I might be wrong, but I thought I remembered hearing that before.

I take enbrel, but have not had reaction site problems.  But I take it in my stomach so I am not sure it it makes a difference or not.  I used to do it in my thighs and arms, but it stung too much.  I hope it gets better soon.  I ice my site before I inject too. Try injecting in your stomach I found no redness there , but if I do it in my legs it would turn red.  meme

Hi, Roxy! You know, I did bring this up to my RD a while back because it freaked me out. I made the 40 minute trek to the office so they could see the knot I had. The nurse said it was probably from injecting a blood vessel and asked me if I was drawing back before injecting to see if any blood came into the syringe. I hadn't been.

I know a lot of people on Enbrel on here see an injection site reaction, I was just wondering if it ever stopped for anyone. I will bring it up to my RD again on my next visit. Thanks for the help!

I've been icing for 20mins before injecting the Enbrel (which I leave on the counter for a good 30). It still burns like a mother though! Haha!

I don't know if I have the cajones to inject myself in the stomach.

Sorry, Link! Missed ya with my last post!

I've been taking Enbrel since the end of July. So roughly 4 months or so. I had my injection Saturday morning and today I have a red "mark" on my thigh. It kinda looks like where the med spread or something. How long was it before you stopped seeing a reaction?

Here's a question..........cause I really don't know the answer. LOL

Do you rub the spot after you inject? Is that a no-no? Or is that okay?

NO!!  I did that ONE TIME.  YOUCH!!!!!

I know I'm not supposed to rub on one of the injections and I can't remember which one, so I don't do either. (That's sad, huh?)

Link - LOL!!!!

Okay Mel, I was just curious. I know you're not supposed to rub where you get yoru Flu shot, or a blood thinner injection.....so I thought maybe that would be the problem! Guess not!

Mel, I wish I could be specific.  It hasn't bothered me in quite a while now, but I don't think I really noticed when it stopped happening.  I don't know if it typically stops after a while or if I am just one of the lucky ones. I know I was still getting it in summer because I remember wearing shorts and people asking if I got bit.

Hmm... well thank you anyhow.

Hope everyone is having a comfortable evening/day!

Mel, maybe by then you won't have to ask.  We can hope!!Yay! That sounds even better!!

I agree - all the OT BS here is seriously out of control.

Too bad we're not supposed to drink. I could really use some liquid courage when I try it!

Mel

For me the problem was the opposite I  did not have problems with injection site reactions until 4 months or so after started Enbrel.  They started to get worse instead of better until the last one it was so bad the area stayed red and hot to the touch for days you could feel the heat coming off it through a pair of blue jeans.  It also was sore to the touch it felted bruised inside sorta the stairs were hard to manage and days later the skin looked all dry and flaky like I had a sunburn it was very strange.  After that the Dr said I was allergic and no more Enbrel  boy do I miss it .  I away's injected my stomach until I started having problems it didn't hurt at all when they made me switch to my thigh it made me cry every time.  Good luck and try the stomach its a lot easier just pinch an inch first if you can I could LOL.

Hi Jersey Linda! I don't think I've met you yet? Welcome to the boards!

Oh, wow. I'm so sorry you had to quit Enbrel. That reaction sounds horrible! The redness I have from my injection yesterday is warm to the touch, but it's not sore. I really hope that I don't become allergic to the med.

I'm keeping some baby weight as a badge of honor. HAHA!! (I'm working on those last 10lbs. I was only on enbrel for a few weeks, like many others I injected in my stomach and it hurt MUCH less and the reactions didn't seem as bad there. ( I had the auto-injector)I havent take Enbrel, only Humira and I have a site reaction each time I inject.  I do take Benadryl and that seems to lesson the frequency it happens.  Now what you said about the pens being "more violent",I thought the same thing but it is SO much better then the syringes.  They are over and done w/ ina bout 30 seconds.  I like them MUCH better.Do you still get the burn with the pens?

OH YES. at least I did. That is one of the many reasons I quit enbrel.

The burn is one of the reasons I like being able to do it myself, I guess. I like being able to control how quickly the med goes in.  I hate the burn, but I think the med is actually helping.

Yes you still get a burn w/ the pens, but it is over so quickly that by the time you notice the burning its done and over with

Hi Mrs. Alexander, I'm fairly new to this site, and I'm so glad you posted what you did.  I'm looking to talk with people, but not may people respond.  I have 2 people that I talk with. I think that when a new person to this site has a question, they should be able to get an answer.  I do have a question, due you take the Enbrel?  When I give myself the shot with the pen, I get bruises.  Is this common?  thanks again for your post.  I have only been on this site for 2 months.  Please let me know if I'm not doing something right.  Thanks in advance.
