Hi .Hope you all had a great holiday .
I was  wondering if any of you  who have ankle pain have found a shoe that really helps .(or inserts too I guess, although any that we have tried have made it worse)
were thinking of getting some Birkenstocks for my daughter but they are very expensive . I don't mind paying the money at all if they are worth it.
I wanted to hear if any one else had suggestions.
of course I guess for my just turned 14 year old daughter ..."they cant be too dorky mom" :-)
thanks for the help
ps ..she is doing soooo much better on her meds !
I'm glad your daughter is responding well to the meds! That's great news! As far as shoes go, I'm a pretty bad example. Haha! I *love* my flip flops. I did buy some cross-trainers by NewBalance recently though. They're awesome because you can get them in different widths and they are very comfortable. Plus, they come in a variety of styles so they're not in the dorky zone.

A lot of us have had success with Crocs, but I don't know how they rate on a 14 year old's dork scale.  There are different styles and tons of colors, so maybe there will be something that will appeal to her.

I just made a recent discovery that I am excited about.  I haven't been able to wear heels for years, but after hearing good things about them, I tried Jessica Simpson's line of dressy heels, and lo and behold, they felt darn good!  The shoe salesman told me that it is either a love or hate thing, so I guess her design suits my kind of foot!  I may actually be able to wear heels for my daughter's wedding!  I can't tell you how big a deal this is to me - I am far more concerned about my shoes for the wedding than my dress!

So anyway, if you daughter needs heels for a special occasion, or anyone else out there does, I suggest you go to a department store and try on a few of Jessica Simpson's different styles!  She also has REALLY cute boots, but I don't need those at my age, LOL!

I like Land's End all-weather mocs or LL Bean comfort slides.  Both come in wide widths and I find them to be very comfortable.  I also cannot live without Thorlo socks.  Very cushiony!!!

I have a great pair of new balance sneakers- they are backless! unless you lifted the back of your pants you would never know (defiantly not dorkey) ....and they are soooooo comfortable. I have a lot of trouble with my feet and ankles and I waitress a 10h shift in them and my feet don’t get to bad until hr 7 or 8. I’m glad your daughter is starting to feel better on the meds. Good luck with the shoe shopping!

Honey- I’m addicted to heels (the higher the better) but I haven’t been able to wear them because of my feet and ankles you have made my night that there is a solution. I’m going to go tmw and buy myself a pair of Jessica Simpsons (I’ll just call it an early Christmas gift to myself!)

I love Dr. Marten's for the comfort...they're a little "too heavy" for my legs now though.Oh and I have a couple pair of MBT's which I absolutely love.  I don't know if they're considered dorky or not... and I don't care.

 Jas what are MBT's?

wow .. I go away and bam all this helpful advice ..  THANK YOU !
I definitely am going to check out thorlo socks for her.. quite a few to choose from though, hmmm ...
I saw a pair of MBT's the other day ,strange shoes ... I wish you could try before you buy.
there are lots of suggestions here. thanks
surprised no one has mentioned Birkenstocks ..I thought that they were "THE" shoe for problem feet and ankles . I should mention that her arthritis is in her ankles and not her feet. Thank goodness!
thanks for all the help !

here is a good link that describes them ...

and I thought Birks were expensive.. any one else out there use these? is it worth the cost?
Go to an athletic store and ask them which shoe gives the best ankle support. Most likely it'll be one used to play basketball. (weird, I know) Also, high tops work great. If she likes the skater style, she can get a pair of high top converse all stars maybe. Boots are good in the winter, they also cover and support the ankle. Try something GOOD like Timberland. postamble().. [QUOTE=JasmineRain] Oh and I have a couple pair of MBT's which I

Jasmine. I tried some of them on when I was in Chicago. I loved them, but
then I looked at the price and about fainted. I think I'm going to get some
tho.

I wear Keens only and absolutely love them. They are great for arthritic feet.Since i have had trouble with the ankles, mainly the talor, and navicular bone, and have had ankle fusions, i still need orthotics...

Of course, the shoes with removable liners, New Balance, has a certain model for pronating feet..

Also Drew shoes, are extra depth, supporting the ankle the most, many styles, some are very fashionalble, like a Mary Jane Khaki colored, and they hold orthotics, and are deep enough..They start at around 0 a pair..www.drewshoescom, or a better shoe store, maybe Foot Solutions carry them...

It's a matter of feeling comfortable, without foot pain..Good Luck

Uggs are amazing, but you need to buy the real ones not knockoffs, they are like pillows on your feet.

I wear Birkenstock's, mostly sandals, all the time, they are expensive but they do go on sale from time to time, I wore one pair so long I wore down the heels, however, the shoe repairman resoled them for .00., so I was able to make them last quite a bit longer.

I use orthotics in my sneakers for walks and shopping (but I don't seem to last very long walking without the use of a shopping cart) but will keep on trying.  Pain in the feet is a big pain in the a!!, This arthritis has no respect for any age whether the young and the old.

Hope this will help you re the birkenstock's question.
