Fibro & Prednisone | Arthritis Information

I was wondering... does prednisone help with fibro like it does RA?

You know like with the pain & symptoms?

Prednisone helps loosen extreme muscle spasms Joonie, along with PT. I have had cortisone shots in deep tissue muscle spasms but not often. I only had the medrol packs for 7 days at a time.

Oh hey!

My right elbow was swelled really bad some time last week. It was one of those nights my mom stayed with me. I was up & down all night because of the pain and trying to prolong taking a pain pill.

So... I noticed that my forearm muscle was like really tight and sticking up off the bone. Yeah... I swear! Ask my mom. You could see the muscle thru my skin poked up off the forearm. And when you rubbed it, it hurt like HELL! I mean to the point of crying like a tittybaby that got smacked upside the head with a baseball bat.

Yep... my muscles have been doing weird things of lately.

Mo'Nana - It did not hurt, until I moved it. What did hurt was the pressure of the inflammation on my elbow. The muscle spasms I was getting in my right leg. I did not know they were muscle spasms, because to me a muscle spasm is when they twitch or even jerk or spasm. They done nothing, but get hard and tense up.

Hi Joonie, Sorry you are having that kind of pain! (or ANY kind of pain).

That is a muscle spasm...when they tighten up and get hard as a rock. They can cause very severe pain. Those muscles can tighten up and put pressure on nerves, too. Some of the worst pain I have is from muscle spasms.

Sometimes muscle relaxants can help. They don't do much for me, but I know many people are really helped by things like flexeril, robaxin, etc. I do take flexeril at night, but it usually takes strong pain meds and rest to control my worst ones in lower back and under shoulder blade. Like Mona said, moist heat can help, too.

Talk to your PCP or RD about them. Hopefully they can prescribe something to help, or tell you what you can do for them.

Hope you feel better

Hugs, Nini

Hi Nini!

Thanks for the reply it helped me out alot. Just sorry you have it so bad. Mine is no where near like yours. I just gets me down once or twice a week and if I am in a RA flare it acts up at the time too.

I am on robaxin for muscle spasms. They were originally given to me for my neck but new RD just kept me on them. They work good, but they did nothing for when my right leg acted up for that 2 weeks or so. I was taking 700mg of robaxin 4 times a day and it done nothing, but make me go to sleep. Eventually had to go to ER and they gave me some GOOD stuff in the bootay! Never thought I would have been so happy to have a shot in my bootay

Would like to hear more on the new fibro drug they are pushing.

Hi Judy, welcome to the board!

Sorry to hear of your pass history of trouble with Lupus, RA, and fibro. I am glad to hear your kidneys are much better now, hope they continue to stay that way too.

Pred just helps me to make it thru my day. I am greatful for it, but I also know it is BAD. I am aiming to get off of in the future, right now I need it until I get the ole Remicade.

Hope to see many more posts from ya! Just remember you are not alone. There is 1% of the population just like ya

I am guessing the pred helps me ole fibro to a certain point then it is just no good. Like if I am on a high dose, over 15mg, it helps.... but anything below that it just bothers me.

I'll take prednisone if I have to, it got me up very quickly, but as you say, in the lower dose it just is nothing but symptoms.  I've learned to "live with..."
