I know...another OT but I just had to bring this up this morning. I'm
shocked that this teacher is being punished for her class naming a teddy
bear Mohammed. She is facing 40 lashes and possible fines and jail time
for this. Any comments?Their has to be more to the story.  Either way, I haven't heard anything about it.  Haven't read the news of the day yet.Do you have a link to the article, I haven't heard anything about it either! http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/africa/11/27/sudan.bear.ap /index.html

hope this helps

15 days in jail................I dont believe it.The people are calling for her exucution this morning. They need to get her
out of that country to safety in Britian. This is the most ridiculous story I
have heard in such a long time. I feel sorry for her. They said she was being deported, so hopefully she'll make it safely back to Britain. When you read crazy stories like that, it makes you appreciate the freedom we have here in the US, and of course other countries around the globe.
When you read crazy stories like that, it makes you appreciate the freedom we have here in the US, and of course other countries around the globe.
AMEN!!!

Though we may all not agree on things in this forum, at least no one will go to jail or be executed for the beliefs and opinions expressed here!
The home secretary here is pulling out all the stops to try and get her home. It really is a bizarre story .I hope it works.  That poor women must be terrified.  And her family....man.  This  is insane.

Here is an update on the teacher.  The president of Sudan is pardening her and sending her home

I hope that when she gets home, some extremist doesn't hurt her or her family, bless her, she was brave enough to go and work there in the first place.  Heres hoping she will have a safe and happy future.  Janie. one of the other articles I read had a quote from one of her muslim co-workers (who is a woman) and said that she was just surprised that she got the kids to vote.  All of her coworkers kept saying how good of a teacher she is and that she would never delibertly do something to offend others.

Am I the only one who thought "what the hell was she thinking? And this, coming from a teacher"

Maybe I'm mean, but if *I* was teaching over there, I'd be VERY mindful of my Ps & Qs. And if I wasn't sure, I'd be asking first. Perhaps I've just read a lot and learned a lot about how they hold everything Mohammad sacred. I dunno.

Am I alone???? Don't get me wrong, I feel bad for her, but at the same time I want to smack her and go "um, DUH!"

Yea I defintly see why so many people were pissed about it I cant see the reason for being jailed though. Maybe someone should have said something to her but it was the kids who named the bear. Maybe they didnt think it was an insult but more of just a name. Some of These people like to live in the stone age. One should look to Afghanistan to see how far women can come. The US has built schools for woman and girls. Many were not allowed to attend under the Taliban . Some have even gone oput without the BurkaRemember folks they do not sepeate church from state there.  When I was thinking of becoming a translator, so long long long ago, I was going to classes to learn about the country that I would have been sent to.  Cultures in the middle east and various other places are so different then ours and it is an extreme insult if you don't keep abreast of their customs.  We tend to be more tolerent, of such situations then other countries.  I am glad the teacher is being released and going home.  At least she will be home for Boxer's day in England.  memeOh I'm glad she's going home too. All I'm saying is, she was in a foreign country, with foreign customs. When you're in that situation, you need to be aware of what is taboo and what is not, and abide by it. Whether you think it's right, just, unfair, whatever. That really goes for ANYONE traveling to ANYWHERE. And the kids may have named him, but I'm sure they see it as her being responsible for the class. Is she not? I'm really not trying to stir up trouble, I'm just trying to get people to think beyond their own world. Am I doing it?? LoL Katie that is what I said in my posting if you are going to another country to live and work you must learn  about the culture and traditions before going, so that you do not cause insult, which is very terrible in alot of cultures.  They are more in to saving face then we are here in US.  Yes she should have been aware of how they cherish the name Muhommed but she did not deserve jail or ending up with 40 lashes, which upset the western world.  In the middle east this is not consiered extreme this is how their government and their religion are.  It is amazing how different cultures are from each other.  memeyea i definitly agree meme...there are just certain things you dont do in certain cultures.  While it may seem like a common name to us, it is something that they take very seriouslyRight right. I just wish she'd thought before she let the kids name him that! When I first heard this story I thought they said the kids had named the bear after a child in the room and she may have thought that was an okay reason, but she obviously didn't take her foreign service training seriously enough. When we send ambassadors to other countries they have to have extensive training in acceptable behavior or should I say unacceptable.

One thing to remember, though, is that Muhammed is a very common name in that country. I really think that it just didn't occur to her, or the children, that it was anything more than just giving the bear a name.

I'm certain that she meant no disrespect, just as the children meant none.

But we have all heard the stories of these outrageous punishments. It is just sad that an innocent act like this is blown up to be such a serious offense. It would be a bit more understandable if she had intended it as an insult to their religion. I still wouldn't agree with the punishment, though.

I am glad she is going home. Hopefully she will be safe there.

I dunno about that it didnt occur to those children.  Were they sudanese (sp?) children?  If so they should be acustomed to the Muslim faith

The school was an independant school for christian and muslim children. This all happened back in September. It was my understanding that one of the childrens parents went to the
school and complained about the name.

I have a question as I think this is unbelievable. Does the Koran(sp?) say that
you beat people as punishment? Or is that a government rule?According to some newspaper articles, it was a disgruntled former employee of the school who reported it in efforts to get the school to shut down.
