Vicodin (and BM’s) | Arthritis Information

So seeing all the crap on the boards made me think of just that...  crap.

I've been really uncomfortable lately so I've been taking a lot of Vicodin. I know that constipation is one of the lousy side effects so I try not to take the drug very often. With how I've been feeling though, it's been a must have.

So.... to put it lightly I'm "stuck."

I took a stool softener yesterday and this morning and still haven't had any luck. I've been drinking lots of water, too. Do you guys know of anything else I can do?

I haven't been eating much and when I do I feel nauseated. I haven't taken any Vicodin in two days so I really don't think it's that. I'm thinking it's because I'm "stuck."

Please help!!

Take care

So what you're saying is you're full of crap?

A long term solution would be a high fibre diet of whole grains and unpeeled vegetables. Avoid meat and cheese. Other than that, I do not know!

Try taking a stool softener with stimulant..check the lable...if it says take 1-4 tabs...don't just take the one..take 2-3 at least.

Good Luck!Magnesium supplements or Milk of Magnesia.  It's not a stimulant laxative - it works by drawing more water into the bowel (and thus, into the crap!). My diet is high in fiber, but doesn't do anything for me when I'm taking pain medication.  Only thing that's worked for me is the stool softener with stimulant.I just remembered I have this recipe from JSNM:

Stimulant laxatives cause me unbelievable cramping and pain... milk of mag (or magnesium tablets) are much more "gentle" and often work within 6 hours.

If I have to take more than 1 or 2 vicodin over the course of a couple days, I always make sure to go overboard with the fiber.  Wasa bread, raisin bran, fruits/vegetables, fibersure chewables... keep it movin'!
JasmineRain39415.5838888889I think I'm gonna try it all!  Thanks you guys!!
I think I'm gonna try it all!

I had this problem too when I was taking the Lortabs for over a week. But it corrected itself for me once I started eating again.

Hope it works out for ya, Mel! Oh and PLEASE DO NOT KEEP US POSTED

You know how sometimes your intestines feel backed up or bloated? That is what I was taking them for. Have not took none in a couple of years.

Hi guys, I swear by stuff called 'Lactulose'. Its like drinking an extremely thick sugary liquid (makes you shiver its that sweet
Hi guys, I swear by stuff called 'Lactulose'.
Yeah...a doctor once told me to try that and it sure works!

I believe lactulose is only available by prescription in the United States.   Miralax is another one to try... it used to be prescription, but is now OTC.  One of my boys had a pooping issue for a while (he refused to go in the potty); the Miralax helped immensely, without causing undue cramping or pain.  It also works by bulking up the stool, similar to lactulose and magnesium.

try some sulfasalazine...that seems to give me the opposite effect! Lol

My sister has this problem and she uses stool softeners  and she says it works.

Mel, You and I have similar problems but we come at it from different ends.
I'm in the office to much and you need to really visit more often.

I can't talk about all the above methods that may or may not help. but I do have another possible solution.

This solution requires that you have a real good buddy to help you out, I mean, a really understanding type of person..

Here goes:

First you have to prepare things by making things ready for the rush.

The main tools for this are:
Bodak....I am "lmao" over here, as they say on the world wide interweb!

Senna tablets are good, no stomach cramping, not to be confused with Senokot.  They're a natural vegetable laxative.  In the US they can be purchased cheaply at CostCo, otherwise a little pricey.

Hope you get some relief soon!Mrs. Go to the pharmacy and buy some mag citrate. It comes in a glass
green bottle and tastes kind of lemon/limey. We call it liquid dynamite at
the hospital. It will work when nothing else does. The lactulose is the other
thing that brings good success but like others have said, it is prescription.
The mag citrate should do the trick. Don't plan a long day away from home
when taking it though, lol. Stick around a bathroom. Then, make sure you
talk to your doctor about a program for the times when you increase your
vicodin. Good luck.

This is simple, Mel.  Just go to you friendly local emergency room and ask them to remove your gallbladder.  I had mine out 15 years ago, and the daily Vicodin has happily balanced everything out now!

Seriously, I hope you find some relief soon!

Geez GoGo, you had to give me credit for the "brown cow" blow out drink

I was given that recipe by an RN who says they use it in nursing homes.

Good luck with the constipation.  I regularly see a professional colonics to help with my slow digestion, which I am going to blame on my disease because I can ~~ let us know, I am impressed you asked for suggestions.  Cathy

Oh, you guys!! My husband and I are cracking up over here!!!!

Bodak - I think I love you!!

Homemade milkshakes, liquid dynamite, major surgery and a plunger. He saw the plug but forgot to step aside, his dog thought it was great as he rushed home to clean up.
He then had to wash the dog, but couldn't figure out how to give the dog a mouth wash.

He said to me (when relating the story) with a straight face, that was a sh*thouse day but not as bad as his uncle had..

His uncle decided that he was the best one (with the most experience) to go down the pit to clear a major sewage blockage.
He heard the gurgling sounds that indicated movement and started climbing up the ladder of the pit when he heard the explosion of rushing sludge.

The force was such that the volume of sludge started backing up the pit.
He started to climb faster but to no avail, the sludge overtook him just as he reached the top.

The boys on top thought they had lost their boss for a few seconds until they saw his hands, followed by his head.
Even though he was out of the pit, his hands and feet were still in the climbing motion.

The boys just cracked up, as I am, reliving the cartoonish pictures of a man trying to climb thin air.

Hence the bit about the plug and to listen very carefully.

You just be careful with what ever action you decide to take.

Good old Magnesium ion.  Whether sulfate, oxide, or citrate... it does the same thing.

Good luck. That problem can be pretty miserable. Hope you find a winner among these suggestions.
I've been on narcotic pain meds for several years, and take them daily. At  this point i've found that 3 stool softeners + laxative every night usually keeps me normal. Just when I think I've discovered the best amount to take, I'll get a bit anemic and have to take iron 3 times a day. That's another treat to add to an already messed up digestive system

Good luck. That problem can be pretty miserable. Hope you find a winner among these suggestions.

OMG iron preparations are the WORST!!!!  I was anemic when I was pregnant; those daily iron tablets (just the OTC ones!) caused far worse plumbing problems than the week of vicodin I had after my appendectomy a few years later.  OMG I almost went to the hospital it was so bad!!!

my nana uses an herbal tea that she gets at a natural food store, and activea (i think thats spelled wrong) its a yougert that we keep in our fridge, my mom says it works wonders- and it tastes really good.

ASK LORSTER ABOUT YOUR PROBLEM. SHE'S GREAT AT UNLOADING A BUNCH OF CRAP!

I'm off the my GI (again) next week to bang my head up against the brick wall that is my GI specialist

If I don't get any satisfaction from this twerp this visit I will ask to be referred to a different GI who might actually be interested in finding out what might be the problem.

Anyway,  if anyone has any ideas.......I would be very happy to hear them.

pammy41639416.0300810185Don't laugh, but I think Jedi Mind Tricks are helping me with "that end" of things, with which I have been having minor issues for some time now. They seem to be gradually resolving and the JMT is the only thing I've changed or added to my lifestyle and treatments.

Long, long ago, before the days of pain meds, I had your problem, but on a temporary basis. The thing that worked was Imodium, an OTC drug. In fact it worked so well that I didn't need a bathroom for days!

You poor thing! That really must be frustrating! It must be awfully hard to live a semi-normal life when you're afraid to get more than a few feet from a potty. I sure hope either this, or something, will help you.

But, in any case, I can't imagine your doc not  trying to figure out what your problem is. You should be able to find something to calm it down, but that doesn't really explain WHY it keeps happening. I agree that you need to find someone who can discover the cause.

Good luck!

Have a good evening, Nini

I took immodium 3 times a day for months and it did nothing.  My GI specialist just says you must have IBS.....too bad,,,,live with it.   I really need to find something that works.  One of the girls I work with has crohns and she takes something called Questran to slow her down,  she wanted me to try it but I take way to many meds to add something unkown into the mix.  I WILL however, ask my GI about something like that as it is also used in postgallbladder diarrhea.I think we should petition for DONN to be banned from the Board, but then again, this subject matter does pertain to him.

Pammy, I was exactly where you are before the pain meds.  Could hardly get away from the toilet.  But since being on Oxycodone regularly, I now have the opposite problem.

My GI doc always said the same as yours IBS and I still have a gall bladder.  Hope you get some answers soon.

pammy, my dad has chrones (it is also ai) recently he went to his gastro doc and he said that a lot of ra symptoms are very similar to those of chrones (fatigue, joint stiffness, mild fever exc.- related to the autoimmune aspect) and some of his chrones patients were originally misdx as having ra. To me a lot of your symptoms sounds like what my dad deals with when his acts up. it might be a good idea to ask your gi doc what his thoughts are about the possibility of a misdx ra and actually having chrones.

WHY WOULD YOU ALL WANT TO BAN ME?

I DO MY VERY BEST TO KEEP ALL YOUR PANTIES FROM GETTING ALL BUNCHED UP, AND JOONIE IS SMART ENOUGH THE REALIZE MY VALUE.

Yep that is right DONN! You have been around for a while. Yep remember watching you on RAF and ya posting and all. You are a fun one I can tell ya that.

DONN likes to keep the panties nice and crisp and colors brighter... he is like Cheer likes to keep clean clothes brite
