My Dr Appt for bruises & pred question | Arthritis Information

So my dr said the bruising is from bleeding from my veins so I am having a CBC done, but she thought it was a not a big concern unless it gets worse. My skin looks bad though so she thought I need to go to 10 mg of prednisone. My neurologist said the same thing because of worsening nerve and muscle problems.

So my question is, would it be better to quit trying to get off the prednisone and stay at a dose like 7.5 than to be doing this roller coaster thing with the doses? It is pretty hard on me to keep adjusting my dose so much. I develop new problems or flare every time it goes down to 5 or less. My drs decided a few weeks ago that I shouldn't go below 5 and now they are thinking 7.5. I hate to be on the stuff, but I really hate this constant up and down, getting sicker, then better, then going through mood swings and pain when I cut down - you get the idea. My daughter can tell from the tone of my emails what dose I'm on, even if I don't say a thing about my health!

Laker

Hmmmm well I mean, in a perfect world you'd wean off the pred and never touch the crap again. I can see staying on it for a short while, as a maintenance dose. But how long are we talking? What I worry about, is if you're feeling that icky and RA-ey when you drop below 5.....well how in control is the disease? Is it time to switch the OTHER meds? I'm just not a fan of Pred being "the pill" I'd be more comfortable seeing someone on a regular dose of MTX & Humira or something. Perhaps the Immuran just isn't working anymore for you? That's my opinion though!

Katie,

that is a good point. I think things are barely under control at best. The trouble is, that I don't think they know what is at the root of all the trouble and imuran covers the possibilites. I will check on adding another drug when I go in Feb to the dr. That seems like it would make sense.

Wow! She wasn't concerned about it?

I wonder if there are any other meds out there that you can try? Did she talk about switching you to something new? There are a lot of people on the boards that swear by AP. Maybe you could get some more info from them and see if it's a route you'd like to take. I'm so sorry you're uncomfortable. I hope you get to feeling better real soon. Hope you have a superfantastic and comfortable evening! Sleep well!
