Antiinflammatories | Arthritis Information

I woke up this morning with numbness and tingling in my left arm. Thought
I had slept wrong but it continued long after I got up so I went to work and
called my doctor. She had me come in and see the NP since she was
booked. Took xrays, assessed me and have determined that I have nerve
damage from my surgery in August. They want me to take neurontin and I
said NO. So.....my choice is advil or aleve and fish oil. Are there any
superior anti inflammatories out there. NP told me that aleve is really hard
on the kidneys and advil does not do a thing for me. Do any of you have
better luck with the Rx NSAIDS? Or are they all basically the same? How
about the neurontin? Does anyone have any feedback about this drug?
Thanks all.

I think neurontin can really help with nerve pain, but it did not help me for some reason and my neuro said it won't-maybe because my nerve problems are caused by vasculitis? I don't know. I was a little drowsy and clumsy at first with neurontin but that went away and I had no real trouble with it. I had no problems when I stopped taking it ( because it didn't work) either.

arriscolwell39416.8953125Naproxen and meloxicam work well for me.  Both give me stomach troubles if I take them for more than a month or so without an acid reducer.

All NSAIDs are equally effective, assuming therapeutically equivalent dosage.  You just need to find the one that works the best for you, while at the same time being easy on your body and wallet.

Hi Lorster

Neurontin ( gabapentin) has worked for me. I've been taking it since Nov/06.  Before I started on the med, the nerve pain in my left hand/wrist was so bad I was getting by with only 2-3 hours sleep /night. Most nights I'd walk the hours away trying to cope with the pain.  It took awhile to work out the dose that would take the pain away. My dr. scripted tylenol 3's to help take the edge off the pain while waiting for the initial dose to kick in. I can't take many of the analgesics because they lower my platelet count. I started with 300mg 2x/day and noticed a difference in pain level within a couple of days. The pain finally went away when I was on 600mg 3x/day. After 4 months being pain free, I started to slowly cut back on the dose. Now I'm down to 300mg 2x day.

The main side effects I experienced were dizziness and brain fog. It was awfully frustrating trying to organize my thoughts and carry on a conversation.

Another med that works for nerve pain and fibro is lyrica... that was an option for me if the neurontin didn't work.

Hope you find some relief soon, Lorster. Please take care with Aleve and Advil... both can be hard on the stomach.

Epsom salt baths might help a bit. They are anti-inflammatory plus you get
some magnesium! They also feel good. Apparently you could add some
baking soda too, according to this GREAT archived thread on AI:

But heat promotes inflammation so maybe the hot water cancels it out?

I wonder how Gena Rogers is doing?has this numbness and tingling been ongoing?. It seems weird that it suddenly appeared more than 3 months after a Aug surgery.  Did they do an emg test?   X'rays cannot detect nerve damage.

Lori - sorry you have to deal with this now too.  In my odyssey to get diagnosed, an ENT doctor (I was having problems swallowing - a symptom of RA), put me on Neurontin for 18 months and I don't think it did a thing.

All I know is that I researched that OTC with naproxen (sp) is the best for RA patients.

Keep us informed, you are much loved in here and rest that shoulder - an order!  Dr. Cathy

Naproxen worked well for me except when I had such a bad attack I was seriously thinking of getting my arm cut off.  The pain went on for over two months and after 2 series of pred. they wouldn't give me anymore.  The doc gave me neurontin and generic Celebrex which I think is no longer available, but it saved my arm.  I was able to put the hatchet away, so to speak.  Why don't you want to try it? I take meloxicam and it has worked decently for almost a year, but now I'm starting to feel bad again so maybe I'm building up a tolerence.  I've also had celebrex and been happy with the results, almost no side effects.  Naproxen didn't do anything for me, but everyone is different of course.  Good luck! The arm pain I am having is a feeling that my arm is about to fall asleep. I
have some nerve damage to my left breast from the surgery. It is painful
and sensitive to touch and I still have a wound, which is a whole other story
but could this be RA pain? I have no idea. I saw a nurse, not a doctor. Neck
xrays were negative. They are assuming that it is from the breast. Maybe
this is RA creeping up and I don't realize it.
