OT Chantix | Arthritis Information

When ABC News started selling their entire Monday broadcast to one advertiser, I was interested to see who would buy the first one.  It was Chantix.  I told hubby that very day, "There must be something getting ready to come out about it, and they need to get as many people on it now as possible before it does."

Here it is:

I know it has helped a lot of people stop smoking, but just something more to consider when you might add another med.

Well, you hit the nail on the head.

And I was very interested in Chantix so I could finally quit smoking.  Guess I'll try the old fashioned way again.  I just can't afford any messing around with my brain chemisty.

Pip

I took Chantix and nearly died from vomiting, dehydration, diarrhea and the like.

I know people who have taken it with no symptoms, however, I don't recommend it to anyone.

Unbelieveable!

That is awful, Kim!  I have only seen posts from people saying it helped them quit, and they had good experiences with it.  I'm glad you are okay.

I wonder how placebos did in the studies?  I mean, like a real patch for the physical side and pill for the mental side, you know?  I wonder if some of the people finally helped by Chantix just responded better knowing they were on a med.  I wonder if placebos w/a nicotine patch were studied vs. Chantix alone.

Pip, if I can quit the old-fashioned way, you can , too!  I was such a heavy smoker, my friends called me "Pigpen" (from Charlie Brown) because I was always surrounded by a swirling cloud!  I went through a spell where I chased a regular cig with a menthol, "to get the cigarette taste out of my mouth".  How pitiful is that????  Now, just whiff gives me a headache.

I took Chantix.  I stopped.  Got tired of always be sick to my stomach.  Even if I took it after a meal like everyone told me.

Some days I would get so lighthead and thought I was going to pass out about an hour after taking it.  And I shook real bad.  I finally said enough.

I took 1/2 of the recommended Chantix dose, quit smoking then quit the Chantix 5 days later.  It says to take it 3 to 6 months after quitting but now I am soooooo glad that I just stopped taking it.I took Chantix the same time I started Lyrica.  Two days in a row I would kind of pass out where I could not respond to my family or caretakers but I could hear them.  Very scary.  I am so glad they did not call the ambulance $$$$$$$$$$$$$  They were seriously considering it.  I quit Chantix and still smoke   So FYI - I think Chantix and Lyrica is a dangerous combination. Way to go BONNY!!!! How long have you been quit now? I am so proud to be a non smoker now...

I hate that Chantix is causing such problems for some folks. It reminds me of Phen-Phen. It was a miracle weight-loss medication. I was so excited for all the obese people. I myself used it and lost so much weight. However, I was only on it for 3 months (recommended time). After all the problems started...I had everything checked out and I was fine.

I pray it doesn't turn out that way with Chantix.

Saw the Chantix ad again last night.  Sort of answered my placebo question, but also gave me many more.

It said Chantix worked for 44% of patients.  It is not recommended with any other cessation products, so they only were taking the pill, which does something to your nicotine receptors.

In print at bottom:  "vs. 18% placebo".

Ahem.  Given the accepted "+/- 5%" statistical range, this could be 39% quit on Chantix (while apparently having vomiting, diarrhea, and suicidal thoughts) vs. 23% quit on their own because they thought were on a med.

I think I am right - nicotine patches and Suzanne's New Miracle Smokestoppers for Pillpoppers are the way to go....

Thanks Lisa.  Today I have 8 weeks and 2 days smoke-free.  I will never take another puff!

Yep Suzanne, again am I happy that I quit taking it.

Bonny, I think it is great that you were so successful so fast and it makes me wonder if others would benefit from just reducing the dose like you did.  It seems like the negative side effects would be decreased, you know?  And like you, other people who have gotten over the 'hump' and are firmly resolved to stop, should be able to stop Chantix, too, without staying on it forever.  I bet if it doesn't work right away, it isn't going to.

When I quit, I did cheat occasionally, but it gets so much easier over time and eventually smoking one just makes you sick.  I never ever crave one anymore, and now that most places are smoke-free, the few places I encounter smoke really bother me.

Suzanne you are right.  I think someone ready can utilize Chantix safely for maybe 1 to 3 weeks instead of 3 to 6 months to quit.  They of course want patients purchasing their product for a long, long time.I think I only used it for 3-4 weeks...I really don't think people need to take it that long either Bonny if they are really ready to quit. Doesn't it make you so proud you are no longer smoking?  Way to go!!!

I am just tickled pink that it will be a year come Jan for me. I never thought I'd be able to quit after trying for over 25 years.
