Fish oil... | Arthritis Information

Hi everyone,

Does fish oil really help? I've been looking towards trying a more natural approch to dealing with my RA and can use any info that you might have. Thanks

I don't personally use it (though about 50 people on this board keep telling me to try it LOL) But there are LOTS of people on here that use it, and swear by it. It's one of the natural things that I think has the most studies and "proof*" that it works.

**not by the FDA, if course, but from other study groups. :)

Works like a charm.  I aim for 3g omega-3's every day (6 to 10 capsules, depending on size and concentration).  I really think fish oil is the reason I have relatively mild issues with RA.  Others in my family have much more severe problems. Fish oil REALLY works for me to control inflammation. I do the same as Jasmine. The brand I take has 300mg EPA/DHA, so I take 10 a day to equal 3grams of the beneficial fats.

You could get an equal amount of beneficial fatty acids by eating 7 ounces of wild salmon or two cans of sardines, so even though 10 capsules seem like a lot it's not really.

Fish oil worked on getting the swelling in my knee to subside when nothing else did, but it took about 3 months to kick in.

My only complaint is it gets kind of expensive. Since I have good health coverage my supplements cost me a lot more monthly than my prescriptions, but I prefer to use fish oil over NSAIDS because there are way fewer unwanted side effects (for instance, fish oil is not hard on your stomach).

I just started taking fishoil so i cant be of any help....

Gimpy, I just bought some online at puitanspride.com and I just looked in the book they gave me and for 1200mg of Fishoil the reg price is 9.99 for 100 and there is 360mg of the EPA/DHA so you would only need about 9 to get the 3gm of it so 100 would last 10 days so yea it would be about if you get it at the reg price.  But puritans pride has a BUNCH of sales all the time.  Like right now all the Puritans Pride brand suplements are 50% off and it looks like on some of them the give you a discount of it if you buy 3

The double strength fish oil works very well for me. I take high dosages (at least the amounts used in studies, and more during a flair) and don't really have any, or very few problems with tenderness and swelling. I just have the pain in joints and it appears lessened. Lately I've added on the borage oil and olive oil with it. I want to see how the triple combination of oils works versus just the fish oil alone, has anyone been on the proper dosages for at least three months to compare? Im also taking Etodolac 500mg twice a day now. I estimate right now with the fish oil alone I probably spend a few dollars a day on it. Rx2Heal39419.7196643519Personally, i tried it for quite a while, about a year.  It did nothing for me.I take "NOW" Ultra Omega-3.  It's distilled (completely removes all heavy metals) and enteric-coated.  It has 500mg EPA and 250mg DHA per 1000mg capsule.  I take 4 to 6 of these capsules a day, for a total of 3g to 4.5g omega 3's.  The last time I bought it, the price was /bottle from netrition.com.  Now it's on sale for .99 a bottle.  One bottle lasts me a little over a month.  Very cheap!

So fish oil reduces inflammation? Does it have any contradictions to medications (i.e. MTX)? I was just wondering because LEV had posted some stuff about grapefruit juice a while back that took me by surprise. Also, do they sell this stuff at WalMart?

Hope everyone is having a superfantastic and comfortable evening!

I take a high cholesterol medicine called Omacor it is made out of the fat of fishoil. Well it actually helps my swelling a bunch. It is a prescription. I am not to take other fishoil products while on it. I am trying to fight an infection and i heard that fishoil lowers your immune system so i quit taking it while on the antibiotics. And i swelled. That is my experience with my medicine and not an anwser to your question. I did take some of my dads fishoil for a few days before i started the Omacor. My stomache swelled up and i was misserable. Then i read that i was not to mix them. Waited a few days and the medicine worked great. I would not go as far as to say it got rid of all the swelling but the infection hit i had trouble getting rid of it. I was barely able to give the medicine a chance and i truly miss it. I just wanted you to be aware that fishoil is supposed to lower your immune system and is an anti imflamatory. The same principal of most RA drugs. I still take or will take my RA meds along with my cholesterol meds when i am done with this infection. Here is a handy online drug interaction checker for you to bookmark:

It also includes supplements such as grapefruit seed extract and fish oil. You
can enter all your medications and supplements and see if you're hurting
yourself or not. Very handy!
