All blood work normal - now what ? | Arthritis Information

Does that mean I absolutely do not have it ?

Then why am I barely able to get up and down with muscle pain and weakness in hips/thighs and am barely able to use my arms from should pain and weakness ?

?????????????

I am better than last year, I can now get out of a chair and out of bed with only a small bit of pain.  My left arm hurts like heck though.  I'm taking Naperson (sp) now.  I alternate between OTC pain pills and aspirin.

I hope we get better soon!   Mary

My husband goes to the doctor's office and makes them give him a copy of the results of the blood work.  Since we changed doctor's the new doctor's office is very slow so he just goes to the lab that runs the tests and they give him a copy. Those records belong to you not the doctor.

Normal blood work does NOT mean you don't have PMR. If you google the following: Polymyalgia Rheumatic Normal ESR you will find a lot of literature about this. I was diagnosed with clinical PMR despite normal ESR (sed rate) and normal CRP as well. Up tp 20% of people with PMR can have normal blood work.
This is an interesting case history of PMR and GCA published in the NZ Medical Journal, where the ESR was normal all along. He was only diagnosed by "accident". Sorry if the link is not clickable, the ones I post never are! It's worth opening and reading though. http://www.nzma.org.nz/journal/118-1224/1718/

Nan,  Just as Chico replied, there are some people who have a normal SED rate or only slightly elevated SED rate.  There are other factors to consider with PMR.  Did your doctor do a CRP (c-reative protein) test with your lab work?  That is something that should be done along with the SED rate.  Also, how a person responds to prednisone is a considering factor in the diagnosis of PMR.  When I was first diagnosed my SED rate was 48 - not too terribly high.  My CRP was 11.0 (high).  Within 48-72 hours of starting prednisone I was like a new person.  It's hard to stay positive when you are feeling so poorly. All of us on this site know this.  But we are all behind you!  Keep us posted to let us know how you are doing.  See your doctor again, if you don't feel better, and ask him to redo your labwork.  If you are still not satisfied try to find another doctor who will help.  I've found out that you have to be your own advocate until you find the right doctor who listens, understands and is willing to help you.  Take care.  Debi A.

Thanks guys.............after taking 8 years to get diagnosed with Fibromyalgia.......virtually unknown when I had it.......I can relate to all you say about DOCS.

I did take some predisone I had and was better within 2 hours....almost as though I did not have it.    If that's diagnostic.........I HAVE IT FOR SURE.

What exasperating illnesses...........the only kind I have it seems.  How can one be soooooooooooooooooo sick and test come back normal.

I had parvo virus (5ths disease) way back 20 years ago, before fibro.......I also had a flu in Aug. 1981 and never got well.

Life is TOUGH when you are sooooooooooo ill.    I'm close to a wheelchair now.........and then this.

Sorry to be so low....................it's just soooooooo exasperating.

AND THEN I HAVE EXPLORATORY surgery to go through right after first of year for an unknown MASS in my abdomen.......that's scary.....iffy, but most painful and goes down my leg with nerve entrapment.   GREAT.............what a fun NEW YEAR to usher in.

I'm normally not so down..........it's early morning and I'm also sooooooooo bad in the AM.

BLESSINGS GALORE TO ALL OF YOU GUYS.............so sorry you are soooooooooo sick too.......and thanks for your input.

Hi,

I am surprised after hearing this. I think you don't take proper diet for your fitness. You should take proper diet by consulting with your fitness trainer.

Take Care.

Do you have or have you ever had either polymyalgia or fibromyalgia?
Nan59, I'm sorry for your pain and hope you are doing better now.
As for bloodwork: I think the docs have to take symptoms into account as well as the blood test results. Last month my Sed Rate had normalized @ 29 so my rheumy wanted me to start tapering off prednisone--I was at 7.5 mg/day and tried to get down to 6 mg...I couldn't do it. The pain and stiffness came back--I was "crippled" most of the day.  Now I am back up to 10 mg because I really wasn't getting any significant relief at 7.5 mg, either.

Hi all!

I may be labelled Newbie but I've had PMR for about 5 years (over 4 years pre-dx) so I do know a bit about it. First of all - I suspect Fredric L is touting for business for fitness trainers! Eejit!

I just wanted to reinforce the "normal blood values DO NOT EXCLUDE PMR" message. As Chico and DebiA have said quite a proportion of people, especially younger ones, have normal blood values - including CRP. I do, in fact they are exceptionally low for my age. The relationship between the inflammatory markers and steroid dose is also not gospel - the only true marker of whether you are on the right dose is how you feel. Lower markers, lowered dose, result pain - wrong! Lower dose, higher markers, no increase in symptoms - OK, keep trying at that dose.

cheers all,
MrsE
