Methotrexate and Surgery | Arthritis Information

Several weeks ago, my Achilles tendon in my left foot ruptured.  For several reasons, I rejected surgery, however now I have no choice, and it has been scheduled for next week.

My orthopedic doctor/surgeon told me today that Methotrexate is a cytotoxic drug that will negatively impact the healing of my tissues.  He said my recent Rituxan infusions will also impede recovery.  (He said that even Azmacourt, an inhaled steroid I use for asthma control, impedes recovery.)

It's very frustrating that some of the drugs we need to help deal with RA, not only have "regular" side effects like nausea, headache, etc. but also that they can work against healing from other problems.

Just venting...

Hummm... I was told that about my prednisone usage. But... each surgery I had I over acheived in the healing department. Like when I broke my elbow... I was on Humira and Prednisone and was told by bone dr I would heal slowly. Well, when I went to get my stitches out... I healed so well... that my skin overlapped my stitches. They said I over acheived in healing.

I hope you do not take as long to recover as they predict. And hope the surgery goes well for you.

Please keep us posted on how it goes and when you go in.
