What Kind of Pillow? | Arthritis Information

For those of you with cervical spine issues, what kind of pillow do you use?  I switched from my feather pillow to one of those with the spongy feel and valley in the middle, but that doesn't work well either.  Any suggestions?

I have 3 pillows for different stages of uncomfortablness.

Pillow one the memory spongy one for when my neck is agony. A couple of weeks use of this then I move onto Pillows 2 & 3.

Pillow 2 is a very thin feather one (absolutely no good for allergies) but for me very necessary.

Pillow 3 is a medium thickness slumberdown foam pillow.

After a couple of weeks with pillow number one, I use pillow 2 and 3 together and slowly over another few weeks, pillow 2 becomes an orniment.

I have tried many, many other pillows and out of it has come the above routine.... it sounds horribly confusing but I think with all our individual requirements its just a case of trial and error.

I bought a Wal-o-pilo.  ( I think thats what the name is ) Cervical type and works great

I use a memory foam pillow and love it, I also have a neck pillow for use when i watch T.V and read in bed.

I know this is probably bad....but I can't find a pillow that doesn't hurt my neck -so sometimes I just don't use a pillow! anybody else do that?

Sometimes it just feels good to lay flat. We have a memory foam mattress, which lets my head kind of sinks in a bit.

Jesse88 I was wrong ....It's called the Wal-Pil-O found it at Painreliever.com $ 51 Dollars

I use multiple pillows.

I have 2 thin ones, sometimes i used one, sometimes both stacked, feather pillows.

I have a stiff pillow nice and fat too.

On horrible days that i can't roll my self over or sit up on my own i use a tall wedge.

I have found that the wedge takes most pain off my back, not sure why yet, but i like my small feather pillows for most days.

I did test out my bed with their sample pillow (i own a tempurpedic bed) and their pillow was one that had a dip in the middle for your head to rest in with ends higher for top of head and neck.  It was sooooooooo comfy.  I should have bought one but it wasn't made from tempurpedic, so it would have formaldyhide (not sure on spelling) which causes me horrible swelling in my lungs. "darn".  It was comfy though.  Wish i could have bought the open pillow so the smell was gone off it :)

Hubby and I will be in the market for a new mattress in the coming months.  I noticed a couple of you mentioned memory foam mattresses, like tempurpedic.  How long have you had them and how comfortable are they?

I have 9 feather pillows.  Yes 9, some of them are so tiny at this point but I end up using them all over to get comfortable.  One under arm, etc, etc.....but it works.  My neck used to hurt until I switched to all feather, or should I say all down.  Not the hard feathers, the fluffy down ones.  Expensive, but worth it.I use 2 memory foam pillows and cant sleep without.  I first got one when I was having really bad neck problems, I noticed a HUGE difference when I woke up the next morning and havent had any "major" issues since

I have one squishy down pillow, the feather pillows I had I ended up donating, waaay too uncomfy and prickly. I also have a medium fluffed pillow ( hypoallergenic one) I use sometimes. I have about 6 or 7 pillows I sleep with all around me as well, sometimes I don't use a pillow....it all depends.Sometimes I stack as many as I can up so I am sort of on a wedge type pillow, and all around, and that is REALLY COMFY! IT does get hard on my back though.

I tried one of those foam pillows all are talking about that shape to your neck...it was awful for me so I gave it to my daughter and she loves it.

Thanks, guys!  It's interesting how many of you use the down/feather pillow.  I thought for sure they wouldn't be supportive enough and that was why I was having trouble with mine.  It does end up sort of flat by morning.  I guess I need to try the multiple routine, memory foam then feather, since neither one works well all the time.  I guess it's not uncommon to have to switch.  Good to know.

Like others I have a selection of pillows, large, small, miniscule, soft, firm, contoured, cut-out, and customized. According to the physical therapist I visit from time to time, pillows should ideally be replaced every two years or, in the case of down pillows professionally "re-fluffed" and the covers replaced.

Two of my current favourites are : Z-body pillow and a full-body pillow.

The full-body pillow is wonderful, so wonderful I have two of them.  It supports not only neck/shoulders but entire spine and when I am lying on my back all my joints are supported.

FWIW.

I love My Tempur-pedic pillow!  Not the one that is shapped funny, but the one that looks like a real pellow!  Love it!I love my down pillows -- a bit expensive but worth it.
