Allergic Reaction? | Arthritis Information

I'm starting the Sulfasalazine tonight, and as I mentioned before, I'm "a little" concerned because my Mother was allergic to Sulfa, so I just want to have a heads up as to what to look for. Anybody else allergic? What happened when you took it?
PS..don't worry, I'm not the type of person who will get sick just thinking about it, LOL

Hi Staci,

I didn't have a reaction to sulfasalazine...just wanted to wish u luck with it

ok i am allergic to Sulfa... i took 1 pill for 2 days i think and then the 3rd ( maybe 4th) day i got really red.. like iw as sunburnt... as the day went on (i was at work) i got deeper red and my skin got prickly.. like it hurt to touch lightly.. then i srtarted getting chest pains.. not like heart attack, but hard to breathe...

Bad thing was i couldnt walk the hallway (i teach) and i told the secretary to get me a sub that i had to leave and it took her over an hour to find someone.. and I FOUND THEM!!! my students who were normally rotton, were like "what can we do, want me to call 911?" i just sent them out to find a certain sub we were looking for.. when he showed up i left and never even told the office!

I went home and called my regular doc and then went in.. got 2 shots of solumedrol and told i shoulda gone to the ER!!! had 2 more days off and within a day i felt better!!!!

Hope this helps.. STOP taking it if you get red or rashy or prickly!

Good luck!

I will be taking one 500 mg pill a day for the first week, then add another pill a day the next week, etc.. until I'm at 4 pills a day. He also gave me a prescription for Folic Acid.

staci- depending on how much the precription is for the folic acid is, it may be cheaper to buy over the counter folic acid.  Thats what i do, i got 350 pills from a place online( i cant get the name on monday, i have the link at my office)  and it cost me about .00.  you just have to take 2.5 of those to be precription strengh otherwise its the same thing.  i only do that cause i dont have ins so its cheaper for me to do it that way.  hope that helps
