Another Meds Question | Arthritis Information

I noticed that some of you have similar neck/throat problems that make swallowing difficult at times.  I've had to stop using Prometrium (a hormone replacement) because the round, rubbery pill gets stuck in my throat.  But I can swallow a large horse pill if it's shaped like a lozenge.  Wierd.  Anyway, I don't like the new pill I'm on and want to go back to Prometrium.  I was wondering if I could puncture the pill and squeeze the contents into juice or something.  I called the manufacturer of the pill and they were non-commital.  They said it's not that it's a bad idea, it's just that they never studied the effectiveness of doing it that way so they can't recommend it.  So, my question to you is, have any of you done what I propose?  That is, squeeze the contents of a pill and not use the casing at all?  If you have, was the medication as effective as before?  I'm thinking there's probably not a lot of you out there who can answer this, or maybe no one can, but I'm hoping someone can tell me their own experience before I call the OB/GYN and ask her about it.  Somehow I think she's going to nix the idea but I'd like to have some information beforehand if I can.  Thanks. Jesse, you are probably having trouble swallowing as the glands in our throats and behind our ears tend to go up with this auto immune disease. I have had similar problems with medications when my throat swelled like this.

My suggestion about the tablet would be probably talk to your local pharmacist. Mine knows me really well as I am one of his best customers, unfortunately. Your pharmacist would probably know what was the best thing to do and might even have some idea or solutions that you haven't thought of or don't know about. . Pharmacists are used to dealing with these kinds of problems. Could you put the pill in a gel cap and swallow the gel cap? You can buy gel caps at the pharmacist.

Cordy, that's a good idea.  I figured if the drug company pharmacist wouldn't commit, another pharmacist wouldn't, but the drug store guy is in the trenches, so-to-speak and may have some good advice.  I will at least try, although I may have to go to a different drug store than my usual.  My guy at Rite Aide isn't so sharp.

Gimpy, that's another alternative I'll look into.  If the gel cap is shaped like a bullet, I could definitely swallow it.  I had no idea gel caps could be bought. I'm assuming it's like an empty shell that the pill could go into.  I'll bring one of my pills and see if it would fit when I talk to the pharmacist.   Thank you both for some good suggestions.

It would make me so happy if one of these ideas worked.  I'll let you know if I'm successful.  Cross your fingers!
