Priobotics???? | Arthritis Information

I have seen several references to priobotic therapy etc.  Can someone give me the reader digest version of this?Yes, I could. I know a lot about them.

well i googled it guess I should of done that first.

So how do I know if probiotics would be helpful to me?  I googled a few articles and it kind of makes sense about your body fighting infection/antibiotics/etc.  I used to have massive bladder infections that occasionally took an IV course of antibiotics to kill.  Which makes me wonder if that is where this RA thing came from for me.

Would probiotics be contraindicated with my current med regime?  Do I choose one or the other?

Thanks for any info.

Andrea

I understand a little more now thanks.  I have always taken asodophilus (sp) for yeast infections and eaten yogurt as well.  I had IBS and graves disease before I was dx'd with RA.  So the yogurt etc. always helped some with the IBS.

This is a link to what i take and the people i buy it from.

this propbiotic has good bacteria for stomach and for woman's parts :)

It is one of the most potent or might be the most potent (haven't seen better).

Soem women with bladder and Bacterial Vaginosiss infestions insert what is in the capsule into the woman areas to help treat as well as take it as a pill per day.

i edited this to add more.

I take it with my regular meds that i was prescribed and am now going down on them due to how well i have gotten.  In theory, you will not get worse (if this really is doing it's job) in the areas it fixed by going down on the meds due to how the meds cause toxicity that the probiotic has to fight.

You may get better going down on meds after it has kicked in, but you may get worse depending on how hard your RA etc. works against you.

My doctor wrote the name of the product i have (took him the box) and he is planning on putting more patients with weird stomach sicknesses on it.

bubbagump39428.6258680556nvrules, sorry about my cryptic post. I have been posting about probiotics for some time now but no one has been interested, and yesterday I was feeling unappreciated and put upon by this forum, hence the above post.

My probiotic posts are in context of taking them with AP, but I believe they are helpful for anyone with AI issues, so please don't let the AP context deter you. Since I have increased my probiotics I have noted many positive changes in my health. If you have pooh problems or diegstive or colon problems increasing probiotic intake is particularly helpful.

Here is a repost of something I once posted on a different thread re: probiotics:

Probiotics are the beneficial bacteria that live in your gut and keep
your gut healthy and they aid digestion. When you take antibiotics a
lot of these beneficial bacteria are killed so you have to replace
them. People not on antibiotics can also benefit from probiotics
because they boost gut health.

Food sources of probiotcs include live culture yogurt and kefir,
unpasteurized miso, and unpasteurised pickled vegetables (particularly
sauerkraut).

Many strains of probiotics can also be purchased in pill, liquid
(yogurt based) or powder form at the pharmacy. Look for brands with
varied probiotic cultures and enteric coating so the probiotics have a
better chance of getting past the stomach acid and into the gut.

When taking probiotics, be they food or pill form, you will get better
results by boosting the probiotic with prebiotics. Prebiotics are foods
that the friendly bacteria like to eat and help them multiply.
Prebiotic foods inlcude but are not limited to berries, oatmeal,
legumes, and Jerusalem artichokes (I love Jerusalem artichokes).

A live culture kefir or yogurt and berry smoothie is a great probiotic
snack, as it has both probiotics and prebiotics.

(I've recently read that homemade kefir might be the best probiotic
because it has a very broad spectrum of bacteria and that bacteria
colonises in your gut whereas probiotics taken in pill form only live
in your gut on a transient basis and are expelled within a few days. I
have no idea of the validity of this).

Yeast also lives in your gut and if you have too much candida yeasts in
your sytem it can lead to acute health problems. Candida and probiotics fight for space, so if you want the probiotics to win there are ways you can handicap the candida, with not eating sugar, or white flour, or things with yeast in them like alcohol or vinegars (except apple cider vinegar).

I was always on the brink of having yeast problems on AP but lately
since I have been getting more probiotics in food and that's helping. I
also now take oil of oregano which is an antifungal and helps with
yeast. I haven't felt "yeastie" for quite a while now, so I may be
getting a grip on it.

And here is a thread in which Joonie and I discuss more in-depth about ways to get probiotics from foods:

I hope that helps. I have been "looking at" probiotics for some time now so if you have any more questions just ask!

ps...I am unaware of any medication which probiotics contraindict, so probiotic away! I had been on antibiotics for oh say a month and a half. I would of been taking probiotics for the whole time except that in the past i had a bad reaction to them. Well i found something new yesterday. That is a different probiotic. The one found in most yogurts. So i started it last night. My entestines were on fire so to speak. Maybe a virus but it seems to have helped with the burning. Anyway i do not guess it will hurt anything. I figure i need them about as much as a person could. I called the pharmacy and they said there was a brand that the clinic recomended to people often. I was doing the yogurt thing but i do not always feel well enough to get out and this way i have a month supply. I have been ill all week and i doubt anything could make me feel worse.
... I have been posting about probiotics for some time
Knowing that I do not sufficiently acknowledge your well researched posts I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for sharing your knowledge, your understanding, your experiences, and your ideas.

Please know that I always read your input and always benefit from what you share re: nutritional supplements, alternative therapies, and JMT.

Thank you for your courage and dedication. Happ
Thanks, Happ, that really means a lot to me. I'm dedicated to gathering all
kinds of knowledge to help me hold at bay or even knock this disease out,
and I do like to share, but sometimes it seems like I'm throwing it into a
void. It's good to know that's not the case.

Anyway, I didn't mean to "hijack" the thread. Back to our regular
programming!
