Hello,

Maybe I can help answer your question.  This is only my opinion.  There are a few types of pink board insulation, one is to build outside walls to homes and the others are used to insulate basement walls that were not built with 2x4 studs.  Measure the thickness of the pink board that you have.

  1. 1 inch the R-value is 5
  2. 1.5 inch R-Value is 7.5
  3. 2 inch R-value is 10

The greater the R-Value the better the insulating quality. Outside facing walls usually use R-13 and attic ceilings R-49.

If you have one of the first two in the list above I would recommend not using it, you would be better off going to Home Depot and buying the cheapest R-13 you can find, R-13 is sufficient in keeping the heat and sound in the basement.  They do make sound deading insulation, but it is really pricy.

If you still want to give what you have a try, you can cut them and put them behind your ceiling tiles or use liquid nails (less work).  Just remember you probably won’t get the ideal results you were expecting.

Again I recommend R-13.  If you do use the R-13 and you have canned lights you will want to use faceless insulation or if you use the paper backed make sure you keep several inches of distance between the can light and the insulation, unless you sure the can lights are rated safe to insulate around.

Insulation is not really designed to also be sound deadening, although it does to a certain extent, it's just supposed to stop the transfer of heat. DD17's bedroom is in the basement and depending on how loud she plays her music (read that as how much we've pissed her off), we can still hear it, even though we have at least 6 inches of fiberglass insulation in the ceiling. We can even hear them laughing when they're having a really good time. You'll probably get some sound deadening from your plan, but you may also have to ask them to be quiet.

Thank you Jason
