Pale clay color stools | Arthritis Information

Besides gluten problems with celiac disease, does anyone know of any other thing that might cause clay color stools?

I have been this way for most of my life and didn't know until i learned about sicknesses that it was bad.

I keep ignoring a celiac test and hope to get it soon, but money is tight right now.  But, I take probiotics to help with digestion but they don't change the color.

I was just wondering if anyone might know of something else that might cause the problem that might be easier to figure out.

Thanks.

Possibly gall bladder? Gall stone blockage?

Antacids or Pepto bismol?

dunno, maybe your diet? Watch and if they turn dark black and are gooey, that may be  blood.

You can also do a google search.

Have you had a liver function test lately?

Seconds Suzanne on the liver.

About four weeks ago, I called both my primary and my rheumatologists because I had suddenly developed the hiccups (even while sleeping), then I passed pale stools.  I asked and the return message was that no, there was no way my medications could be causing pale stools.

Two weeks later my liver blood work is skyrocketing and I am in a washout for 2 medications.

Good luck ~~ Cathy

justsaynoemore39438.3537731481hepatitis can also cause clay-or light colored stools

I have had the clay stool for so many years i don't know when it started.  During that time i have had liver checks etc. cuz of RA drugs they tested and always passed with flying colors.

Also had kidney's tested, heart tested as well alone with tests for hepatitus B and C, TB tests too.  All fine.

Well you said your whole life that you had this problem? That is the puzzle part? I would have said possible liver fuction which i personally get some liver envolvement with my flares. But really i know money is tight but have you seen a good internal medicine doctor. Is this a come and go all of your life or a newer problem. I mean has it gotten worse?

Since i was diagnosed with RA, it has gotten lighter in color.  But it was always a very very pale brown before, now it is almost a very clay/yellow/white ish color.

When i started the probiotics, for a few days i had a darker sort of brown color, but it went away quickly.

All right scince you were dx with RA. Well you get RA everywhere. How are your liver enzymes? Then this is a newer problem, I would get it checked as soon as possible. Please tell your doctor. Pale stools

This has a lot of really good info! May be malabsorpsion of food? This is a forum so you can ask and get the doctors opinion too. Good luck.

I had my liver checked last june alone with other tests (can't remember what they were, just know i had to put a lot of bowel movements into little jars).

They found nothing wrong.  I think it's digestion somehow.

Bubba - about 4 years ago now, I pulled my records in disgust from Cleveland Clinic, (after 5 years) and the next doctor I saw pulled my amalyse and lipase (never done before) blood tests, and that pain I had been complaining about in my right abdomen and the pale, clay stools (for 5 years) were causing severe acute pancreatitis attacks.  Since my mother died of pancreatic cancer and its hereditary, that was a shocker.

It took another year before I referred myself to a surgeon and had my infected, diseased gall bladder removed (no stones on the scan, so nothing was done).  I have since been using OTC digestive enzymes (which a doctor can prescribe), OTC bile supplements, (which a doctor can prescribe) and had regular professional colonics until I got my impacted lower colon unblocked so at least I could defecate more effectively.

Your digestive system is the key to good health.  I think my slow moving colon from my disease backed up into my inner organs, and started this chain of events, plus the infected gall bladder which gets me back to the use of antibiotics to help us along.  So, you are correct, its digestion, somehow.  Best of luck and let us know how it goes.

Bile is what gives poop it's color. If you have light coloroed stolls there is something wrong with either the gall bladder or liver problems.I had my gallbladder taken out last flare. Had to get a hida-scan i think that is what they called the test. I had the ultra sounds done so many many times over the years and they all came out fine. But i did flunk the hida-scan test and got rid of the darn thing. Doc said he didn't think i would get much relief from it as i have infamatory bowel disease. I sure did get some relief. Doc said we just took out a perfectly healthy gallbladder. I note that it was a pefectly healthy gallbadder that did not work. The test films your gallbadder in action. They send you to mcDonalds and have you eat a cheese burger fries and a shake and come back. As high fat foods are supposed to make your gallbladder go into action. Mine did not respond. I would hate to think if i still had that in me i could be more misserable this flare than i already have been. And my gallbladder really used to hurt very badly. So it was prior to this about two or three months when my liver enzymes where elevated. Then they where back to normal before i had the gallbladder out. So my liver enzymes straightened out on there own just before the gallbladder attack. Anyway i got my enzymes run again yesterday but do not have the results back till after the holiday. So hopefully they are still fine. I am supposed to get them checked periodically because of a medicine i take.
