How much Fish Oil? | Arthritis Information

I have read that fish oil has been known to help some people with inflammation that comes with RA.  I have started taking it but I do not know how much I am supposed to take.  Currently I am taking 6 1500mg gelcaps.  I have taken as many as 12 in a day.  I would like to know what would be the correct amount...and how you determine how much you need to take?

Thanks in Advance,

Lori

You know TimeofMyLife, I take fish oil too but I don't think it's enough either. I take 1000mgs 3x a day. Jasmine or Gimpy will be along to tell you how much...I want to know too. Aim for 3 grams (3000 mg) of omega-3's every day.  You'll have to read the label to see how much omega-3 fats are in your brand.  You will have to take as many as 10 capsules per day to get enough omega-3 fats.  Currently, I take NOW Ultra-omega 3 (4 capsules per day), which has 500mg EPA and 250mg DHA from fish oil concentrate. I get it from netrition.com.

Be sure to talk with your medical team before you start taking this much fish oil. It can increase your risk of hemorrhagic stroke, suppress your immune system, alter triglyceride and cholesterol levels, affect blood sugar control in diabetics, etc.  Be careful, and good luck!!! I'm ok then. Just curious....how was it determined that we need 3000 mgs. a day for benefit with RA? or who determined it?...

Thanks again Jas!

From the various studies and recommendations I've seen, not much effect on RA is seen until you get around the 3 gram/day mark.  Personally, that's about the same level that I noticed real decreases in pain and stiffness as well. I try to remember to take six capsules of fish oil in the morning and at night.

If you are on statin drugs, you really need to take CoQ10 to offset possible damage to your heart.
