Stone laid for NIN block in memory of Yellapragada

HYDERABAD: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is setting up a study and research centre at the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) here in memory of Bhimavaram-born eminent scientist Yellapragada Subbarow. It has been named ‘Dr. Yellapragada Subbarow Electron Microscope Block’. The institute will also launch a website of his works.

S.K. Bhattacharya, ICMR’s additional Director-General, addressing the inaugural function of the two-day birth anniversary celebrations of the ‘eminent medical mind’ here on Friday, conceded that the country had not cared to secure a Nobel Prize for the scientist.

He remarked that ‘it is surprising that Subbarow did not get the Nobel Prize. We were unlucky. We regret it. May be we did not care for it. We did not lobby for it.’ Dr. Bhattacharya quoted a top US scientist as telling him that ‘we have to lobby to get the Nobel Prize.’

He and other speakers praised Dr. Subbarow who was responsible for developing antibiotics/nutrients to fight several diseases, like plague, malaria, filaria, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. They said although his drugs helped millions of people, Subbarow’s family did not benefit. Dr. Bhattacharya remarked that Subbarow was an ideal scientist who did not care for money, but contributed to the growth of science.

Wow.......holy wow.

Wow.
for those who didn't look him up Dr. Yellapragada Subbarow and his team at Lederle Labatories  invented methotrxate, folic acid and the parent drug of tetracycline

You mean this is my unknown-until-now hero?  I've been wondering about this guy/guys/gals for ages now but never stopped to do the research.

He's the guy who started the Minocin ball rolling.

I wanted to look him up and hug him.  Too late for Scammell too.
