Leg Braces | Arthritis Information

MY right leg is beginning to twist to the right. I am unable to lay my leg out straight when i sit on the floor. I a due for exrays this week..Do many folks have to wear leg braces?

Yes, sometimes I have to wear them and have several different kinds that I do wear.

I have ones that wrap around, these are for the worst times, they keep my knees slightly bent so i don't have problems when they go streight.  Then I have ones that are just elastic/material, they pull on over the feet up to the knees and hold them tight for when my knees like to shift when walking.  Then I have the straps.  They are thin black long straps like a long skinny rectangle, they velcro behind.  Sometimes i need my knee caps pushed up when i walk or swelling causes too much pain, so i wear them just under my knees.

Always remember not to wear them 24/7.  If you sleep with them, take them off during the day, rub down your legs away from your heart to keep blood flowing.

see what the x'rays say before doing anything.  There are many different types of knee braces and they are designed to do different things.  Contractures ( inability to straighten) are generally a muscle problem and that problem may be able to be resolved by physical therapy

Hugs to you Cynthia.

I don't have any leg braces.  I have knee ones (and need new ones) these now slip too much and hurt more to wear them than not.  My brace is mostly to hold the knee caps from moving.

what is all this talk of knee cap moving, is it related to ra? I hurt my knee really badly when i was 11, and part of the issue was my knee cap was moving.....I got a big cast from mid calf to mid thigh with metal up the sides as well as a horseshoe thing to help the knee cap. Just wondering if this injury is related to my jra.....

Oh my I have been told so many things as far as my knees go.  But yet to have been told arthritis is the actual problem.

Here is what I was told last visit.  Because of the way my legs grew I think they call it knocked kneed, it put undo pressure on the knee and knee cap area.  Then the cartlidge (sp) wore out super early in life.  Last ortho doc said about the only help left now is TKR.  And there isn't one doc that will touch me with that because of my age.  Weird too I have heard of many people even those younger having TKR done.

shykymom. I just wanted to say that they want to wait until ppl are in their
late 50's to do a knee replacement. They last about 10 to 12 years and
revisions are done all the time. So, why should people wait until that age to
have a knee that works right? It makes no sense to me. I would rather get it
done young and be able to enjoy it while I was still at an age to enjoy it. I
don't know what the rationale is behind this but I sure would love to know. I agree Lorster.  Especially if we still have younger kids at home.  Would be nicer to be able to "play" with them now and not wait until they are adults.
