MRI I am so embarassed | Arthritis Information

I went for an MRI on my shoulder today.  Not my first MRI.  I have had two on the jaw (before and after surgery) two on my head and one for my knees.

Well I gown up they strap me in.  It starts to feel warm around my neck. I say cool it's cold in here.  I am a cold person anyways I love the warmth.

Well my chest gets warm.  Then it is downright hot.  Burning hot.  So bad I wonder if I am gonna pass out.  I hit the button.  The nurse comes.  I tell her.  She said yea it gets a little warm and the warmth probably just scared you and you panic a little.

I say no this isn't warmth this is hot very very hot on my chest.  So she said you will be fine I promise you have about 6 min left.

Get done I say thank god.  The man said yea it does get warm.  I say ,"dude I like warm this was something more".  I get home I have this rash on my chest that itches just like when I am out in the sun.

I am so embarassed because I can just imagine how they talk afterwards of what a baby I was.  I know they talk.  I worked in a nursing home and all the nurses talked about patients as well as the docs office.  I just fell so well embarassed.

Thanks for letting me vent so to speak.

I wouldn't be embarrassed - if they had listened to you and checked where you were saying, they would have seen the rash.  Do you know what caused it?  Hope it is better now.I have no clue what caused it.  Well possible the strap they had on me.  For some reason that area is where the burning was.  My neck got warm and the only thing there was a pillow.  But warm was all.Maybe whatever they cleaned it with, you were allergic to. It would have dried up completely on the hard surfaces, but not on the strap and pillow. ???

A very wise man ( our pediatrician) once said to me (while I had been watching his kids and rumor was building all over town) .they are going to talk  no matter what happens. You just ignore it.

Did you have an MRI with contrast? The only thing I could find linking a rash to MRIs, was for people who had contrast done. (injected) And they didn't get the rash until during, or after the MRI was done. Which would fit you, if you had contrast done.I had a CT(or was it MRI? I can't remember) with contrast once when I went to the ER for abdominal pain (turned out to be acute appendicitis).  The contrast made me feel hot all over, but the warmth concentrated in my nether regions - specifically the end of my alimentary canal.

Nope no contrast this time.  I have had that before.  This wasn't anything like that.  That was warm feeling.  This was downright so hot I thought I was going to scream.  And each time the MRI stopped before the next series it would cool right down.  Then the machine would start up again and it would be warm then hot hot within 30 seconds.

Felt honestly like somone was pouring boiling hot water onto my chest.

Yikes!  That is strange!!!!!
I think I would call the doctor and report that.  That's too weird, almost like it was burning you somehow or something.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. I wonder what kind of chemical reactions it can cause? I'm still thinking something strange, like a detergent or lotion or something.

I wonder what an MRI would do to someone with lead poisioning? That just popped into my head. Dunno why.

I thought about going to the doc and showing him.  (but he wasn't it).  It is mostly gone now and hardly itches.  Weird just like when I am out in the sun.   Looked the same.  Felt the same. (the rash that is) and went away after a couple hours.

Well I just know the nurse thought it was "all in my head".  And no matter what anyone thought I know it wasn't and I know it did not feel right.  Something was very wrong.  I wanted to stick her butt in there LOL.

You get the same thing when you go out in the sun???? Do you have RA or Lupus?Did you have any cream/lotion on your skin?  Anything with metal?

Nope no cream or lotion I knew better.  I have a small metal plate in my jaw but no where else.  And the MRI's have never bothered my jaw.

I have RA.  Two different doctors before thought I had lupus but the blood work came back neg.  So just RA and OA.  As far as I know.

Yes, the nurse informed me that I would not feel burning if I had no metal in my chest.  But I did.  Makes me wonder if it was the machine.  Or something in the material in the straps they used.  I will never know since no one up there believed me.

I'd report it.  They may not believe you, but when it happens again, they will listen to that person becasue they have heard it before. Is it possible that you have shrapnel, metal shavings, etc embedded in your skin?  Do you have a tattoo?  A friend of mine has a few metal shards embedded in his shoulder from some mishap as a child.

Definitely talk to your doc about it!  If you have to have another MRI and it happens again, take pictures before and after!!!!!

Shrapnel!

Would a tattoo cause something like that? I've never had a problem with mine.

Good thought Jasmine about the pictures.  After this time around I am hoping I never need that done again.  lol   hey it scared me.

I have no tatoos.  Want one but I am wayyyyy too much of a baby to get one.  No metal shards that I am aware of.

Last MRI of my brain was like 2 yrs ago and no problems then.  I still think it had something to do with that strap.  I hope the next person complained.  Not because I want someone to hurt, but I would like them to take it serious and try and check it out.

I've heard that some tattoos can cause problems in MRI's - it depends on what was used to create it.

And being from a rough area, I have several friends who have bullets inside them.  Doctors tend not to remove them if they're in a risky spot, or if they are not causing problems (especially if the patient does not have insurance)... or if the patient avoids the hospital all-together because he/she doesn't want the law after them.

In rare cases, you may feel:

That is how I felt the burning then dizziness.

There should be an asterisk at the end of that!

*telling your tehcnologist does not nessicarily mean they will do anything about it....

Sounds like I wasn't the only one.

I had an MRI on my hip last Sunday and during 2 of the 6 or 7 scans they did  I definitely felt pain in my hip.  Just those two scans so I knew it was related to the scan.  When I told the tech later that 2 of the scans were painful he just shrugged it off and said.  'Well they don't really cause pain'.  I said well I HAD pain right in my hip during 2 of the scans.  Then he said that if there is a large amount of fluid sometimes you might get a warm feeling.      All I know is that my hip hurt.

When I got my results on Wednesday they said ...... get this......I need another MRI because the results were inconclusive.   So now I'm waiting for a call to go have another MRI, with contrast this time, to see if they can figure out what the heck is wrong with my hip.  The MRI did show that it doesn't look like trochanteric bursitis,  it's not in the right place.  It's everywhere else mind you  just not over the head of the trochanter.  It seems to be all wrapped around the hip joint and through the muscles.  My next Rheumy visit is on the first and she wants the next set of results before that so I'm hoping they call for me in the next few days

If you think they're going to talk about you, I can't imagine what the MRI people said about me. Frankly I didn't care. I have had MRI"s before but always went in feet first.  For this test I got put into the MRI head first with my head and neck secured in what looked like a cage. It took me being there 3 times before I got it done. The first time the woman had just started the test when I opened my eyes and saw how close the top and sides of the machine were to me.   I started screaming "I can't do this" over and over.  She came running and pulled me out.  Told me I would have to come back the next day and they would give me something to relax me. For the second time I go back the next day, they give me 2 tranquilizers and tell me I have to wait 45 minutes for them to kick in.  I'm sitting in the waiting room, with my mother, fighting to keep my eyes open and they come out and tell us the machine isn't working.  We had had a real bad thunderstorm the previous night and it knocked their computers offline.  I would have to reschedule. That was a Friday.  They gave me another appointment for Monday.  I worried myself sick all weekend because going in headfirst made me feel like I was in a coffin.  They gave me more drugs the third time but I was so nervous they didn't work as well.  I did manage to get it done this time though.   midnitestich39465.0701851852

Oh Pammy that's terrible.  Honest if they told me I needed another one I don't think I could do it right now.  And I have never ever had a problem before.

Mind I feel bad for you.  The enclosed didn't seem to bother me so I guess I am very very lucky.  My sister has to go to one of those open MRI's.  I have never seen one.  Do they have them in your area??

Yes i've actually had one of my knees done in an open MRI machine.  From what I can remember it looked like a big square box hanging from the ceiling.  I had to lay on a table under it.  I didn't even have to take off my jean shorts even though they had a metal zipper.  Tech told me it wasn't necessary for the open MRI.
Another time they didn't have me remove my shoes and they had metal on them.  They put me into the machine, and my feet started pulling up with my knees trying to jam into the machine and all wrapped up in the blankets and me yelling THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG HERE until they came running out and took off my shoes.  Gawd.
OMG...I am sorry, but that is hilarious...you totally painted a picture with that story...The only MRI I've ever had was of my knee, and it was an open one. I just layed there with music blasting. It rocked....LOL

Well the Dr's office called here yesterday evening.  I was in shock.  This is the place that you have to call every day for two weeks usually to get test results. (Most of the time I give up and go in for results make an appt).

Now either they are trying to (get it together) or it's something else.  First off they called (nurse) wanted to know how my son was.  Shocked me.  He has been sick all week.  Then the nurse said the doctor got my results and she sat up an appt. for monday I needed to come in.  Nothing more.  So of course I am going to wonder all weekend what they found.

I hope this helps.....you just have to go with flow. Try not to worry too much and I know that is difficult but whatever they may have found it is there and thankfully the DR.'s have found it. You cannot change it, you cna only problem solve it.

SOmetimes it really sucks! But please try not to be too worried.

Prayers and hugs sent for you,

jode
