Editorial cartoon by Mike Peters.  Headline "Pediatric Medicine in the 21st Century".  Depicts mom holding baby and doctor saying, "Chicken soup".

Yep, now that they say don't give the cold meds; too dangerous and they don't work....

It is true that there is a slowly growing trend for doctors, nurses and patients alike to more carefully exam the true benefit vs risk for medications, procedures, and other "technology". Many have come to a point of realization that less is more. This really was evident as the term "poly-pharmacy" came into use when talking about chronically ill and especially the elderly who were being loaded up with perscription after perscription.

Our ER has been full of parents seeking 2nd opinions after their pedi's have told them to go home and use saline drops a bulb suction for their infants nasal congestion. They just dont want to believe that it is okay to let a viral illness run it's course. Gone are the days of sending every  kid with the sniffles home with an antibiotic. That is how our antibiotics started being outsmarted by the bacteria.

I think it is a smart move, I depend a great deal on my medication...but I certainly believe in the less is more theory.
