Will my fall trigger a flare? | Arthritis Information

This afternoon I was out walking as I do every day, and tripped over my own feet!  Wow, did I go down hard.  Fell onto concrete on both knees, my wrists, and right shoulder.  My knees blew up instantly, and now I have an ostrich egg on each.  Wrists not as bad, shoulder slightly painful. As I am newly diagnosed with RA, I wonder if the swelling in my knees, althought unrelated to RA, will trigger a flare?  Has anyone experienced this?Good question, I'll be interested to hear the answers.  Hope you feel better Nancy.  Sounds like you're pretty messed up.Linncn39470.5842013889I'm so sorry you fell! Make sure you ice those knees. I don't know if it will trigger a flare, but I do know it adds to the pain.

I'm at grandson's ice arena for hockey practice.  I'm carrying his 2 hockey sticks and some other assorted gear as I'm walking down a flight of stairs to reach the changing room floor.  There are at least 100 parents, kids and others on the changing room floor.  I totally blow off the last step and keep walking as though I'm about to step onto flat surface.  I fall forward, twisting first my right ankle, then slamming into the floor with both knees and then kind of flipping over onto my side like a dead fish but not before I put my right hand out and twist the hell out of my wrist trying to stop this chain reaction of injuries. I ended up with a grape sized swollen tendon on my r. ankle which is still there after two weeks (Doc says its common for RA'ers esp. those on pred, not to heal as fast) and a wicked pain in my wrist that feels just like a RA flare but most likely is a sprain.  The most damaged part of me was my ego.  I felt like a complete idiot.  61yr old grandma, in her moon boots, doing the crappie flop,(thats pronounced "croppy" for you non fish people) on the floor in front of dozens of snickering hockey "Stepford Wives" adorned in all the latest in hockey mom finery.  Yep! Another fine moment to add to my dossier of disasters.  I definitely have spacial concept issues now that I have RA.  I hope your injury heals well for you.

Ah yes....the Clumsies is what we call it around here.  I have some famous public falls.

My knee does feel like it's in a flare right now, but when I try to describe the pain of RA, I often say that the joint feels bruised, as though someone smashed it with a large wooden mallet.  That's how the knee feels tonight - the difference is that it is black and blue, a true bruise.

Grandmaskittles, you are so right about stress....so far, every flare I have had was brought on by stress.  I will try not to worry!

Thank you all for your input -- I appreciate it!

Good god, if flares were caused by falls I'd be S-C-R-E-W-E-D.

I fall just thinking about falling. It's pathetic. And it has NOTHING to do with the RA, I'm just messed up somewhere. LOL I fall putting my socks on, sitting on the bed.

I KNOW! HOW??!?! Don't ask me. I just do.

If there is something to trip over (or even if there isn't) I'll find it....

I agree with the stress bit...don't stress! Stress DOES cause flares. *is living proof*

*hugs* ice those babies up and let us know how you're feeling!
