Ankles-shoes | Arthritis Information

All that is left of my first big RA attack is my clumsy stiff hands and my ankles and the front part of my feet right under my ankles ise stiff.

Unless I have completely flat shoes on my ankles hurt when I walk.

I am returning to work Monday and all my pants are long because I'm so short.

Any suggestions?

Do you think my days of stillettos are gone forever (sob?)

I hate RA

Dear wanttobe

Apply heat in some form (I like hot water) to those stiff hands and feet. Then do gentle range of motion exercises. I have been pretty good at re-gaining my ROM and working the major stiffness out of my joints after a major flare. It usually takes me about a month after a major flare to re-gain lost ground.

Maybe you will make make it back to those heels for very special occasions. If you do please don't 'push' it to far with lots of walking or dancing... those things can ruin healthy feet.

hugs to you

I'm a shoe freak and it is really sad to be so limited in choice of footwear that does not cause absolute 'agony of de feet'.

When I put on a pair of heels my feet hurt so bad that I can hardly walk.  When I want to wear heels I will take a pain pill that morning and pull the heels off when I get where I am going.  I am one who love heels when I call myself dressing up.  a lot of sunday's I wear flat shoes because of the pain I experience on the top of my feet.

Have you tried any kind of orthotics?? You can buy them at some stores or you can get custom fitted at a podiatrist. They can be expensive, but with having RA--your insurance would most likely pick it up. Mine did and they help out alot.

Thanks for the suggestions and for commiserating with me.

I guess I will be using the pair of slippers under my desk when my feet get too bad.

I find that a shoe with wedge , i.e. the same size wedge from toe to heel and looking like a boat effect is great for special occasions, there is no pressure on the sole of the foot and there is a cushion effect from the ground cos of the inch or so wedge.  I have a few pairs I have picked up, especially in summer sandals and they are quite comfortable..  Hope you can visualise what I mean.

Ya know, flats are all the rage right now!! Pffttt to heels...I haven't been able to wear real heels since like...........oh wait, NEVER. LOL

Sometimes, you'll be able to get away with a teeny heel, and that's cool. But def. don't push yourself!

I wear flats and/or tennis shoes everywhere.  I mostly wear my tennis shoes even when i dress up just because my feet love them.

Right now i have an pair of Nike shoes that are very very very light in weight.  I am very picky with shoes cuz they have to weight next to nothing or my ankles scream.

I can't even think of a tiny heel.

I have to wear a tie-on shoe or else my left leg starts to ache from struggling to hold my shoe on and it's just not worth it. I can get away with a loafer type shoe or heel for a short time if there's only a little walking involved.  It's improved very slightly with the meds I'm on and that makes me wonder if you also could get some more improvement of your foot condition with a tweaking of your meds.  Something to mention to your RD next time.  I miss being able to walk without shoes nearly as much as I do those stunning heels, outstanding colours, and straps-to-sigh-for.

Instead, I have learned to be well satisfied with a goodly fit, a nicely supportive arch, and easy-to-use Velcro closures: shoe strings are beyond my capability and , damn-it-all, sometimes asking to have my shoes tied sssttttrrecccches my tolerance for  askin'-for-help beyond its limits. Some small independences are imperative.
