OT: About Randy...and old regular | Arthritis Information

Kelstv brought this to my attention and we both felt that it should be shared w/ the rest of you.  Many of you know Randy (Rando), well it is my understanding from Kelstv that he had made a post over at Rheumerweb about the firestation that he was a fireman at burned down and was solisitating donations from RW to go to the firestation.  There were those that doubted him and made a call to the fire chief down in TN and none of it was true...He was never a fireman there and there was never a fire at the station and Randy was never given permission to solisite (sp?) donations on behalf of the station.  Here is what was said at RW.  I am not doing this to bad mouth him at all, I feel that it is important to let everyone know incase he asked anyone from here for donations

I really don't know what to say or think about all this...Randy and I were VERY close at one point (that is all im comfortable saying) and I just feel so STUPID that I believed him

I never knew this person, but it is so heartbreaking when someone tries to con people in such a sensitive manner. It sort of destroys your confidence in the kindness and sincerity of the people that we have come to care about.

Thankfully, the good of the world far outweigh the bad. It's just knowing one from the other that is so dismal at times.

Shannon, I think you and Kelly have done a service to those of us who might have been taken advantage of. Thank you..

I, too, never knew this person but it's such a shame that there's people who feel that they have to take advange of others. Hopefully, this will remind all of us that it's so easy in cyber space to claim one thing or another that isn't everything that it seems.

The point of this thread is that Randy was a very long time regular here, and he did develop alot of relationships with people. We are not sure if they still talk to him, and he very well may have scammed them too.

Shannon asked me if I thought we should post it on AI, and I told her yes, I thought it was fair that everyone he was friends with know, just in case. They have just as much right to contact the fire chief with what they know, as anyone on rhumorweb does.

 

 

You see, what the underlying issue here is, is that the owners of rhumorweb USED to own this site. They sold it, and started a new one, and business just isn't booming over there like it does here. So godforbid we talk about the same thing over here! Is it becoming clear now? I thought so.

Then, she changed it to a link. But IslandWoman is too much of a baby, so she deleted the post on her site.

If anyone was looking for the fire chief's email, because you were scammed, I'm sorry but IslandWoman does not want you to be able to contact the fire dept. Apparently, she doesn't want justice for everyone, just for her board.

Part of the problem is that the purpose here really wasn't to "help" potential victims it was to spread gossip about someone that she had a history with.

First of all let me say that I am very shocked over this.  Even tho I highly doubted him being a fireman due to him not being able to verify his stories and me being a paramedic and in a firehouse some of the things he would say sounded fishy to me, he did have correct and incredible knowledge of JRA and the 504 Plan that I needed for Danielle when we first found out about her having JRA.  Even tho I was not one of the people scammed by him for money, I still feel very scammed because of what he did.  So that leaves me thinking was everything he did say not come from personal knowledge and he just read up and studied up on these things in order to scam people?  How terrible is that?  Bottom line, what he did was a terrible thing and people need to know about it.  He is where he rightly belongs now.  In jail.  And I hope he flares!!!  That is if he even has RA.  I hope they do find out who gave him money and he has to pay back every single cent of what he stole from people that have a horrible disease.  How horrible of him to prey upon people like us!  Dispicable!!  What I can not understand while I was reading thru this thread, is WHY this IslandWoman person would NOT want this posted here in case Randy did scam someone here.  Is it not the right of posters here to know of this situation?  This site is where I met Randy and started talking to him.  Does this IslandWoman person not want to see someone recover their hard earned money that they were scammed out of?  Especially someone that shares in the pain and misery of this disease.  It is like no matter if he scammed money out of you, you were still scammed because now you can not trust that anything he said was the truth.  Even if some things were true.  I feel very suspicious now of IslandWoman because she jumped down the throat of someone that posted a warning about a scam.  And she included a link to the actual post so there were no mistakes made in posing what happened.  And she posted where the link came from giving the site the proper credit.  Does this mean that IslandWoman was somehow involved in this?  Is she protecting Randy?  Should we now be cautious of her and take what she says with a grain of salt?  Did she jump down the original posters throat because she did get scammed and she is now embarrassed?  Is there someone else involved in this scam that the cops haven’t busted yet and any posts about this would be a warning to them?  One would think like I stated before that she would want fellow RA’ers to know about this just in case someone here got scammed.  It is just not classy nor is it mature to make the kind of threats towards a fellow RA’er that she made.  It is in fact down right unacceptable.  Shame on you IslandWoman for behaving in the manner that you did.  If she is an owner of rheumorweb, that is one support forum I will be avoiding.  She sure did not give her forum a good name. 

 

The point is…I would want to know if someone was running a scam.  I really don’t care how I got the info.  I would want to protect my fellow RA’ers from giving out their hard earned money that could have gone to meds or a donation to the AF. I really do not feel that this was to spread rumors, gossip, or a haha! in someone’s face.  Like I said before…I feel scammed even tho I wasn’t scammed for money.  And I have NO prior history with Randy besides friendship. 

I see nothing wrong with what Shannon did at all. If more people warned others of things they know as " fact " maybe we would not be so easily scamed . Too many scammers get away with things because their last victims don't say any thing . Are they just embarassed that they got scammed ? All I have to say is " Thank you Shannon

I question the motive because of the sources involved.  Katie will bad mouth and back stab anyone who isn't part of her clique and Shannon had a negative history with Randy.

Since no information from or about Randy and the "fire" had been posted on this board there really wasn't a reason to take a post from another board and post it here. If Shannon truly believed she was "helping" then there were better ways to handle the situation.

I understand its against the unwritten rules of AI to publically state a differing opinion from someone who is part of "the group" but shoot me...I believe what Shannon did, whatever her intentions, was wrong.

Buckeye my intentions were ONLY to warn people incase this happened to them.  If I wanted to be a b*tch I woud have added my opiniono about him but I didnt.... God forbid I try to do something nice and warn people about someone that is scamming others.  I will NOT appologize for anything that I have posted for I did NOTHING wrong!

I don't consider myself to be part of any particular group.  I certainly wouldn't go along with something I thought was wrong out of loyalty to a group or an individual.  I will appreciate it if you don't make those  assumptions about me.

I think it's very arrogant to say that if someone disagrees with you, Buckeye, they can't really think you're wrong, they only want to stay with the "in crowd".

Copying a post that you did not write and had no permission to re-distribute is in fact illegal whether there is a copyright notice or not.  So, it WASN'T Shannon's right to post the original post here no matter what her motives were.  If it was someone else's words she had no right to copy them legally.  Anyone who writes for a living would feel very unhappy if their work was stolen and copyright violations are theft in reality.  Linking to it is perfectly legal.  As for her motive, I don't think it was wrong although given her past with Rando, I CAN see why people would question the motive behind it. 


But, if you thought Rando was who he said he really was after the last time he claimed he was at a fire at a specific time when it was shown he was posting at that same time, well, then I'll sell ya some nice property on the ocean, in Arizona! 

As for IslandWoman being the owner of RheumorWeb, I don't think so. I was an original AI member long before Rando or IW were in the picture. And unless there's been a sale on RW that I don't know about,  Kimmy is the owner, IslandWoman is just one of the ones who keeps it going since you never seem to see Kimmy much.  Which sounds a lot like here.  Gee no moderation and people are fighting? Shocker!

You all did know Rando tried to gull the people at RW for money for last year's Arthritis Summit right? And apparently was successful in getting some people to give him money. And then something major and catastrophic happened in his life to stop him from going. 

So while this could have been handled much better, the intent was to protect innocent people from getting screwed by a known liar.  Next, just ask before you copy someone's words without their permission.

Apparently, you need to buy yourself a dictionary.  Plagiarism and copyright infringement are NOT the same thing.  I did NOT accuse Shannon of plagiarism.  I said that copying IslandWoman's words without IW's permission was copyright infringement.

Facts and ideas are not able to be copyrighted but the way they are put together are.  And in this case...this was a post IW wrote.  Not Shannon. In either event, plagiarism or copyright infringement, it's still theft. I've actually been to boards where it says "do not copy ANY posts from this site unless you have the permission of the post's author and the admin of this site."  Even Yahoo Groups recently sent out a statement that it is NOT ok to copy posts to other sites unless you have the permission of the AUTHOR.  It was listed not as plagiarism but as copyright infringement.

And before you try to say that posts on message boards are NOT copyrighted unless they contain a copyright notice or because they are posted in public...check out www.copyright.gov for laws pertaining to US based sites.  Which last I checked, both here and RW were US based. 

So, before you accuse someone of doing something they DIDN'T do, get your facts straight and learn to read!  If you can point to where I said Shannon plagiarized in my other post, I'd like to see it. 

Do I think IW was wrong in the way she went about being unhappy this was posted on here? Yes. She could have asked privately or nicely even and saved the threats for if Shannon didn't comply with the LAW!  Her rudeness just led to a bunch of crap both her and there.  But, Shannon was in the wrong first.  And I know if my words were posted somewhere without my permission, I'd be unhappy too.  It's just courtesy and following the law.

I dont post here very much but I think what Shannon did was right and was not plagiarizing or anything of the sort.
 
About a year ago on another forum I post on Randy was soliciting funds for the Arthritis Summit. I thought it was a noble gesture so I offered to send some money.  Anyway the owner of the board closed his post stating he is not allowed to solicit on the forum and he became quite nasty and sent her several rude pms.  She told me all about him and needless to say I didnt send any money.
 
It seems he goes from forum to forum and eventually gets booted out.  He obviously needs help.
 
Island Woman I know you from the old AI boards and thought you were a kind compassionate person.  The fact that you dont want other people to know about this to me is a little odd.  People should know about this so they dont lose money they might already not have in the first place.

I also think what shannon did was right. A lot of us were sure there was something wrong but there a re lots of newbies who might have sent money not knowing that they were being scammed. I sure hope no one got taken in too badly. God on you Shannon thanks for thinking of the people on here.

So where am I wrong?  I've done the research.  According to the law, Shannon was wrong to copy a posting from another site and paste it here, unless Shannon wrote it.   It was IslandWoman's words.  They were considered copyright whether you like it or not.  That's legally.  Morally, yes, any where Rando posted should know what a creep he is.  But, given the past between Shannon and Rando....it would have looked better coming from another person so that no one questioned her motive.  Had I not known IW's reputation from  RW, and I just saw Shannon posting it, I'd not likely have believed a word of it due to knowing the past between Shannon and Rando. 

Arris, I'd like to see, since you say I am wrong...where the copyright law says it's ok to take another person's words and post them in their entirety.  Unlike you and many others here...my emotions don't rule my posts generally.  But, since you are all knowing and the goddess of being right....please prove me wrong. 

One must also take "Fair use" into consideration.  News reports use clips from each other's copyrighted newscasts all the time under fair use; newspapers quote each other, musicians sample other musicians' works in their own.

Alright here is my 2 cents on this.  Janis, Island Woman, has been a member of this AI board long before many of us have been here.  In fact she was with the original owners of this site and she was the first one to welcome me to this board when i first joined, several years ago. She then moved on with the ladies who sold this site to the current owner,  but she still pops in every so often.  Janis is the type of person who is there for you through thick and thin, she has the biggest heart I know, and would be there if you need her without question.  What Rando did was absolutely terrible and I hope he rots in jail for what he did to people, but I understand why Janis is upet about her posting from her site  being placed here.  First of all you have Rando doing his song and dance getting people from the site donating, then to find out what he was actually doing with the money and his lying, yes I would be embarrassed for others to know he scammed me.  I also understand Shannon wanted to let us know about it but maybe it would have been better to post it in her own words instead of Janis' words.  This is all I have to say about this I hope Rando gets what he deserves and I hope it never ever happens to any of us.  meme

We can argue forever about the legalities of Shannon's quote, but what it comes down to is that she did us all a great service.  Maybe it wasn't proper "netiquette" (that can also be argued to death) but I can't understand why Island Woman would object to people being protected from a scam artist.   Stealing money is the worst form of "netiquette" abuse and I would think she'd be happy to be part of the solution.  I just went back to the RW board and saw how helpful Kimmy was about the whole mess.  That's the kind of response I would have expected from IW and anyone else who cares about other people in even the most remote way.   Can we please not kill the messenger?  Shannon, ya done good!This should be a warning to all of you. I remember when people here were soliciting for funds and donations for an arthritis summit, I think Rando was part of that deal along with a couple others. It was a bad way to do business. No checks and balances for the funds and donations. No one knows whether 100 dollars was collected or 3,000 dollars was collected. No way of knowing whether the funds were spent as they should be or if they were sucked up someones nose. If it is a legal collection, the donations will be sent to a bank or other institution with checks and balances open for all to see. Look at this post and read it all, it' reads like a good mystery and has a surprising ending.

It is so surprising how people just accept that everyone is who they are. The amount of personal information given up on this forum is absolutely mind boggling. Moms have said forever, don't talk to strangers but yet so many mothers here treat total strangers as their best friends. I have many times warned all members here to be careful of giving personal information and have usually been attacked by the very same people each time. Who and what is a con? Con is short for confidence. A con man or woman first gains your confidence and so you give up to the confidence person information that you shouldn't give up because they are your friends and they even confide their personal information to you. A confidence person tells you all about their personal life and the personal life of their family. If you use the same password at forums that you use for your security sites (email, banks, other financial institutions and etcs) you need to stop reading this and go change your security passwords. When you are asked for information even in a gameful or "fun" manner always ask yourself, "Is this personal information and can it even slightly possibly be used to steal my identity or money or etcs. Keep in mind that an identity thief would love to have a face picture of you along with birth date, last name, where you live, what city you live in, your parents and kids names, their ages and especially the birth dates. Every little fact you give about you is one step closer to possible disaster. How many times have you seen where someone thought they were in contact with some sweet person just to find out too late that it was some nigerien and the money is gone. Don't even think that all thiefs and cons are from another country. So many of you have given up so much of your personal information that I won't be surprised if you are your husband's or kids' identities aren't stolen and of course it will not be traced back to one of your good friends at this site because they just sweetly get the information and another fellow con uses it for their evil ways.  When you complain that your identity was stolen on this site, your good friend will heap you with sympathy and anger. I know that i drug this out to the point of boring you. I just wish that somewhere in what I wrote you will at least be more careful about your personal information, so many times it is the so nice people that are scammed. Cons know how to play yous. Little by little they aquire little of your info, they have good patience because they know that patience gets them the prize, and you get the surprize.

Lev...for the record...I DID go to the summit last year.  And NO money was donated to me.  Yes Alan payied for the airfare and Katie was able to hook me up w/ an awesome price for the room...I can only speak for myself though, I cant say how much if any money was collected by RandyActually, aside from Randy being a con on that thread you posted Lev, that conference went WONDERFULLY. Shannon and Megan both went, and were able to speak and got LOTS of a great information.

Like they say, 2 outa 3 ain't bad! And I'd donate room discounts again and again and again. And I bet Alan wouldn't have given his airline points to anyone else! I think it was a huge success. :)

First of all, I have to agree with who ever posted that Janis (aka: IW or island woman) is a most caring and compasionate lady who truly goes out of her way to try to help others!!! She is a well respected member over at RW and always was a well respected member here at AI. The fact that some of us chose to follow the original creators of AI over to a new group should have absolutely NO impact on who they are and what they are trying to do. I mean, really, grow up people!!!

I rather take offense to those who have chosen, in this very thread, to mock not only Janis, but Kimmy as well. Wow!!!

Setting aside whether Shannon was wrong or not in making the original post (and yes, I do believe she was wrong. Would only have taken a mere few minutes to have emailed Janis and ask her is she minded if you shared the info over at AI), did even one of you stop to consider that perhaps the reason Janis reacted the way she did and as strongly as she did was because Randy being busted, arrested, etc had just literally happened and as is true in MOST police investigations, especially one so new and fresh, the police don't usually want it spread all over the place until they have adequate time to collect information and gather evidence??? Did any of you stop to consider just for one minute that since this incident primarily effected RW, that maybe the police (and Janis) would not want this spread all over multiple ng's until they dealth with the RW people and the incident at hand there first?

I mean really people, most of you are adults---act like it for heavens sake!!!

And I really think that Katie (aka:arriscowell) owes a whole lot of people some apologies for the most unbecoming behavior and the most childish round of name calling and feeling like you just have to be right!!! I have lost any respect I might have had for you now and will know to steer clear of you completely over at RW!!! Never would have guessed that you could have been so cruel, so rude, and so childish!!!

We all need to stop and think things through before we just fly off the handle and turn a thread like this one into a cat fight!

Maybe others will in the future take the few extra minutes to ask someone before you hijack their thread or post.

We do know that his computers have been seized and he will be facing a grand jury investigation. All I can say is the Chief (Rice) told me "there is more to the story that I can't tell you." That could be anything at all. I could speculate, but what good would that do.
You know, I vaguely remember Randy.  I can tell you, however, that if I had ever sent him money, I'd want to know about this now, so I could contact the police as a potential victim.  After all, they will be "gathering" their evidence and would likely want to talk to me too!  I see nothing wrong with what Shannon did.

Captain Crunch peanut butter is much better than Reeses puffs.  I think my all-time favorite, though, is Coco Crispies!!!  Especially when making Rice Crispy Treats!!!!
I kinda like Rice Crispy's. But I ate a bowl of it the other day... and I actually got one of the dry rice crispys stuck to the back of my throat and it was not coming loose. I thought I was going to die by a rice crispy.Oh BTW who the heck is the Mod on here? MODR8R? I think not!

I have to have dairy free cereal and besides flintstones overly sugarred cereal, i have to eat some gluten/dairy free cereals like buckwheat and rice.  They aren't bad, but I sure miss things like captain crunch, honey comb and raisen brans :)

I LOVE Post Banana Nut cereal! I can eat the whole 18oz of cereal in one day. But I do not do that unless I have fat free milk. Hubby & Kids like whole milk, but it makes me sick to drink more than glass of it.
