uggggh  and YICK

Last friday night ( about 2 am sat morning) I woke up with my belly button just hurting like crazy.  When I got up the thing was all red and inflamed and FULL of pus.

It drained and drained all weekend, ick, and monday I got in to see my PCP by saying the magic words "immunosuppressed" she took one look and also said "ICK"
she put me on 2 heavy duty antibiotis, and an ointment, and sent me for blood work.  Monday and Tuesday night  my navel was so sore I couldnt bend over, or lift anything..

Yesterday I went back to dr and its far better.. and today has stopped draining.

we still have no idea where it came from.. jakies impetigo? but that was a month ago..  I felt pretty sick for a few days but  dont now.

I go back on Wed for another followup..

I'm supposed to take my MTX this afternoon. She told me to take it but pay attention to the navel and anything happens go to the er.. sheesh.

perfect... and yesterday was our 33rd wedding anniversary. nice celebration.

33 years is AMAZING!!!

I'm sorry to hear you're not feeling well. I must have missed something.... How in the world did your belly button get like that?? Is it a side effect from MTX?? I hope you heal quickly and get to feeling better real soon. (And get to celebrate your anniversary properly!)

PS - When I saw the topic "MRSA" I thought this was regarding me. we have no idea. it just popped up  infected. I didnt scratch it or dig in it or anything. bizzarre.

we are celebrating 33 years even though we actually divorced each other for a couple years..we got remarried 4 years ago.  wild huh?
Happy Anniversary!
Hope your  bb heals with no problems
Happy Anniversary!!!  Congrats on 33 years!!!  Way to go!!!

That really is odd about your poor belly button.  I am glad that it is getting better tho.  Let us know if the mtx affects it at all.
Did they culture the wound and find MRSA? What is MRSA?
What is MRSA?
Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus

JasmineRain2008-02-01 12:01:42Linncn, MRSA stands for methacillin resistant staph aureus. It is caused by over prescribing of antibiotics combined with people not taking the entire prescription, still having the bug and then the bugs that do survive, become resistant to it. It most often starts out as a large pimple like lesion and the most common sites are the arm pits, or groin area or other areas that are moist such as the labia....or in Kathys case, the naval. There is community acquired or hospital acquired. The community variety usually responds better to treatment. They usually treat it with Vancomycin, Bactrim and Bactroban ointment. It is a BAD thing to have and you must be extremely compliant with the meds to get rid of it.

Ah.  Well, i'm part of that problem.  I doubt that I've ever completed a full prescription in my adult life.  You know, you start feeling better and then forget to take your medicine.

Cathy, sorry for my part in your bad belly button.
I think I can help with this one.  I had a similar thing happen.  Mine wasn't as bad as yours, but it sounds similar.   I checked on the internet before I was going to go to the doctor.  When I googled, one of the things that popped up was an allergic reaction to the metal  button on your jeans.  Sure enough I had been wearing some new jeans in the past couple of days.  I put some cortisone cream on it and it cleared up.  I just make sure the bare metal doesn't touch my skin when I wear the jeans now.  mmm well no jeans with buttons, I wear the "mom" jeans  the pull up ones.

I've never in my life taken antibiotics for anything that wasnt absolutely necessary for..  I'm not one to ask a dr  for an antibiotic for  something like a cold.. If I take them its for real bacterial infections.

I'm also super compliant if it says take for 10 days I make sure every last  pill is taken.

they cultured it, its MRSA. I have no clue how I got it. I dont use a gym, I haven't been in the hospital, haven't had surgery..haven't had anything pierced in 25 years, and then only my ears.

I'm baffled

Everyone is covered in staph, we all have it. Most of us don't have the methicillin resistant kind, but those who do can break out in abscesses even though they don't have an opening in the skin. I work in the ER and we see a LOT of it. Thanks to the press, everyone thinks they're gonna die when they are diagnosed with it.  Some cases are extraordinarilly hard to treat, esecially if the person has allergies to the antiobiotics used to treat them. I've been a nurse for 20 years and of all the people I have taken care of with staph, only one has died. He didn't take his antiobiotics, only the pain meds. Was only 28 or so. Killed him with 2 weeks of the abscess forming on his buttock. I'm not trying to scare you, just make sure you take ALL the medication presribed!Hi Kathy, My hubby had something similiar to what you are describing several years ago, only it was MRSA, at least if it was we didn't know anything about it. His dr said that it was possible that His navel didn't heal properly when his umbilical cord came off. Then at some point he got a little piece of lint or something in his belly button that found that opening and caused an infection. Don't know if that was really it or not but he had a terrible time. Like you, it swelled and so did his tummy around it and it all got red and hot and it drained liked crazy and he said it hurt like hill. His finally got better, I sure do hope yours does too.
