My doctor's office was closed today.

Does anyone know if it's ok to take your methotrexate if you have cold sores on your lip?

I just keep getting blister after blister.
I've had cold sores since I was about 10.  I've been taking mtx for the last 16 years now and have never stopped taking my mtx when I've had a cold sore.

One thing I've learned here actually...can't remember who it was that mentioned this...but ask your doctor about famciclovir.  I just got some famciclovir from my doctor and you take a pill as soon as  you feel a cold sore starting.  You take one twice a day for 5 days...or whatever your doctor tells you...and  it stops the cold sore from developing.  I just used it for the first time last week and I was really happy with it.   Before that, I was just using abreva.
do you take folic acid along with your Methotrexate?  That might help get rid of them.Thanks- I will ask about this! I'm using camphophenique but as soon as one dries up a new one is right above it.

Yes I do take the folic acid too.

I just went back to work on Monday after 2 months and everyone there had colds. I don't know if I got this instead or if maybe it's stress related...
hi, I've had these also, since a kid, the BEST thing, i've found is
a vitimin called LYSINE, this actually stops it....if you start using it at the first sign, or before
the tingle, or when you're sick or stressed.

Plus, use some toner, to dry out your lips and put some neosporin on.

and of course, always wear sunscreen on your lips!!

Hope this helps.. and its pretty inexpensive and sooooo worth it!!
I do get that warning tingle- this is worth a try!I've been getting cold sores since I was five years old.  I know this because my kindergarten school picture shows a beauty of one on my lip.  Lovely.  Several years ago a dermatologist prescribed acyclovir which I take as soon as I get that "tingle." It sounds like a similar drug to what Kelstev mentioned.  If I catch it in time, the sore never even develops.  It's the best.  My RD said I can take still take it along with my A/I drugs and I've had no problems with the mix.  I'd be very upset if I had to give up my acyclovir.  It has stopped many cold sores over the years.
