Plaquinil, MTX, and your Liver | Arthritis Information

I was speaking to one of the Rheumatologist from the medical school at the hospital I work at this week about his opinion on injectable MTX. He asked my dosage and asked my why I was not on Plaquinil also. I told him I had failed that drug, and we moved on to MTX. He then said that plaquinil has an added benifit in protecting the liver while on the MTX. I had never heard this before. My liver is fine for now, so I have no desire to pop another pill. Has anyone else heard this before? He also questioned my diagnosis and says he really thinks I have lupus rather than the undifferentiated inflammatory polyarthritis I have been diagnosed with because of my lack of damaged joints and the fact that I am black. I don't know what to think. Right now the MTX is working great and I have no intention of changing a thing until I try to cut back on the drugs, not add to them. I am also guessing that he believes I should be on Plaquinil because he believes I have Lupus. What do you guys think?Caprice - I am very close to your situation, with a little of this, little of that, but the push is towards lupus.  I was immediately put on MTX and folic acid, but the Plaquenil was added for a substitute for quinine for leg cramps, as they pulled abruptly pulled quinine sulphate off the market last year.  So my rheumatologist was AGAINST putting me on Plaquenil for lupus, but reluctantly did it when the QS was withdrawn from the shelves.

I am now weaned off the MTX, folic acid, and Plaquenil, and using another DMARDS, and feel great.  I feel better every day I get away from having to take the MTX or Plaquenil.  But that's just me.

It is a complicated situation, so I wish you luck.  Trust your gut reaction.  Take care ~~ Cathy
