Hi, I have read a lot of you Do Not take your folic acid the same day as MTX does anyone take it same day? my Rd never said do not take, so I have been taking same day. why can't you take same day? Some rd's say that it decreases the effect of the mtx. I asked my rd about this and he said no it doesn't and you can take the folic acid the same day as your mtx. The only thing he really says not to do on mtx day is to have anything alcoholic.
When I was taking folic acid my RD said to take it every day, including MTX day. I'm now on leucovorin and he said to take that the same day too. But I've read on an arthritis site that it's better to take it 12-24 hours later. I know many here do that too. I guess what I'm trying to say is, you'll get several different opinions and I don't think it makes much difference either way. EXCEPT for that part about alcohol. Whether you abstain completely or have just a few drinks, you need to be careful about how much alcohol you drink while you're on MTX. I choose to abstain completely. As long as I can have my desserts, I'm totally OK with no liquor. I take folic acid every day, day in and day out, whether a MTX day or not.
Best bet is to ask your RD for his/her recommendation.
I was told to take folic acid every day (one mg)...no mention of what time of day to take it. I usually take it at lunch and take Methotrexate with dinner. Think I'll start taking folic acid in the am after reading these posts. I was surprised to hear that the dosages of folic acid vary...qwill check with my doctor on next visit to see if I should up the dosage. (I've only been taking Methotrexate for a month and am very concerned about possible hair loss.) I used to have extremely thick hair, but with all the RA drugs over many years (plus my age), my hair is a lot thinner. Can't believe I used to complain that it was "too thick!"I started on 1mg am now taking 3mg because of mouth sores. I was told that was the max. I'm not sure of any complications from being on higher does anyone know?Thanks SnowOwl for the good info. I was directed to take 5mg on Wed and Fri with the Methotrexate on Sundays.
