I was going to PM you, but your inbox is full.

Can you give me guidance on what to look for when selecting a probiotic?

The biggest thing is the most strains and as many live cultures as possible.  I use Solaray Multidophilus 12 available in the refrigerated section of Whole Foods - but any brand should do.  Some swear by Florastor; other by PB8???  WF pushes the Jarrow with FOS but it did nothing for me.  Aaahhh....you'll know when it's working...you'll get regulated.  Start with one cap and slowly work up.  The 'slowly' is because you may get gassy, bloated, etc. with starting because your flora is so far off.

Hope GoGo see this.

P.S.  Thanks ...will clean out the PM box.

Are the refrigerated ones better?

I'm under the impression they are...but can't figure something out.  WF's says they get the Solaray in in huge refrigeration trucks.  But I found it online for a lot less money.  But online it says 'refrigerate after opening'.  So...I'm kind of stuck.  I know that brand works best for my body and I've tried a bunch of different ones (hey, price is a concern) but...if the refrigeration is 'hype' I'd just buy them online...know what I mean?

Hey, while we're on the topic.........................

Would you recommend taking probiotics when you're just on antibiotics for a regular ol' infection? Ya know, the 10 day thing. Or is that too short of a stint to matter?
If the antibiotics bother your stomach while you are on them, I would.   No need to suffer with that.  You could try yogurt, too, instead of buying a bottle you might not finish.  I can't say enough how important I think probiotics are to our general well being.  And while it's best to get this stuff in natural form (yogurt, kefir) I'd be drowning in what I need.  LOL  So, I think the pill form is great.

We should ALWAYS take them on antibiotics...but, if we're trying to bring our symptoms down, I'd start small and work up.  Like one cap a day and increase after a week or two until you are regular-regular-regular.  If you get my meaning.  :-)

Heck, I'd been meaning to research the links to anxiety.  I'd bet it would help... but slammed with life now.  Sigh.

It's normal to get stomach upset, gassy, bloating when starting them.  It kind of proves that there isn't enough natural good flora in your body so your body kind of goes...AWK!  What is this stuff?  But after awhile things start running more smoothly as by giving your body good flora it can convert the food you're taking in to 'fuel' so it should help with mineral and vitamin absorbtion.

I swear it's true - on Zithromax and yogurt, my daughter has pooped something the size of her arm.  We are constantly amazed at what she...produces.  Funny that fish oil slowed her down - another reason I'm ready to kiss that goodbye.I agree with Pip that probiotics are always important, even if you're not on antibiotics. Many cultures have incorporated probiotic foods into their daily diets to improve overall longevity and health. Probiotics help regulate digestion and unpleasant bowel and flatulence issues. I eat a lot of probiotic foods but I also take OTC probiotics every day. I mix them up to get a broader spectrum of beneficial probiotics. I notice the kefir makes the biggest difference, and I try to have a kefir and berry smoothie every day.

I asked a few pharmacists about the refrigeration issue and they said it's okay to have the probiotics at room temperature while they're hermatically sealed but once you open them you need to keep them in the fridge. That makes sense since acidolphilus pearls don't need to be refrigerated because of their triple enteric coating.

Some probiotics (such as Florastor) are not acidolphilus but rather freeze dried spores and they don't need to be refrigerated ever.
I think Florastor is what we have? I dunno, I'll have to look. It didn't say anything about putting it in the fridge.

Would you believe, that since I started the antibiotics, I had one day where I was really messed up, and now I'm actually MORE normal and feel better (gut-wise)

Is that weird?!?!?
Not if you had some bad bacteria in your gut.  Then the antibiotic would even it out, I guess.
