how to alkalinize your body | Arthritis Information

Going to give this a go, particularly as I've now started the 8oz glass of water with 2 teasp of cider vinegar 3x a day.   This is what i've learned.

Drink 6-8 glasses water a day
Eat lots of fruit and veg (avoiding citrus and tomatoes)
Snacks (dates, bananas, almonds, black olives in oil, all alkaline)
Avoid grains
Avoid red meat
Avoid sugar and food with additives
Drink glass of carrot juice daily (very alkaline)
Emphasise grilled / baked fish, chicken,  baked potatoes, salads
Avoid tea/coffee, drink substitutes - herbal teas and chicory "coffees"

Anyone done anything like this?  Can give me any hints and tips?   Had any good effects?

Anna

Also, will add in a little Greek cheese in salads.
The carrot juice has to be freshly made, not shop bought.

Anna - I also buy the ph testing strips and test every day to see which way I am going, then adjust my diet accordingly.  That's an excellent summation of a good day's diet.  CathyCathy,
I will get some strips.  Do you know which ones I should buy?
Anna
Anna - I have several sources, but it's all based in geography, so I have no idea if the UK sells these OTC.  Lilly has a Tes-Tape, or glucose enzymatic test strip, Eli Lily & Co, Indianapolis, IN  42685.  Litmus Paper No. 5090, distributed by John G. Kyles, Inc., Norwalk, CT  06856.  ph Test Strips by VAXA International, Tampa, FL 33609.  What's interesting is to test your tongue, then a separate test of your urine.  Read the instructions carefully, as some are specialized for say urine samples only, but others could test a fast-food soda drink :)

justsaynoemore2008-02-09 11:13:41Actually, the part about avoiding citrus is wrong. Lemon is extremely alkaline when consumed. It's one of the best things for that. Other citrus fruits are alkaline in varying degrees.

Cucumbers also rate highly. There is a particular problem with lemon as far as alkalinity is concerned.   Some people metabolise it differently and it can be very acidic.     You have to be careful with this one.

ohh gawd, thats great you can do that.. I admit it, i'm a horrible junk food junkie!!!
give up caffine.. HA... I have finally started to limit coke a cola.. and switch to green tea's.
Tho, on my days out, i always get a coke!

Fruit is outrageously priced and the kind I like, melons, cantelope, watermelon, etc
is like 9 bucks for a med bowl or 6 for a tiny one!!!!!!!!! grrrrrrrr

I will try the apple cider drink bc it really does melt off pounds!!
i just have 0 desire for veggies/ fruit..( salad.. ~bleck)
 tho i like smoothies..

I have heard a handful of almonds is good for you everyday, that i can do..
carrot juice??!! LOL nooooooooo , noooooooooo

honestly, i really haven't made many food connections to my body, as far as the RA..
tho.. I've also heard that our fav foods, can be the worst for our bodies..
i have to admit pork does seem to affect my joints a bit...

good thread :)

Whispered, we need to get you to start doing shots of liquid wheat grass LOL  ~~ Cathy

Please keep posting how these diet changes make you feel!  On another board, when this came up, someone posted an article that said you can change the ph of your urine, but that doesn't have anything to do with the rest of you?  However it was laid out, it seemed to make sense, but yet others would post that changing their diets made a huge difference.

Good luck with it!
Suzanne - if you get too alkalyine or too acidic, it becomes the environment that parasites can thrive in.  whispered,
i think the cider vinegar (2 teasp) in water before a meal seems to be good for losing weight. it's what i've read anyway.     also, if there was just two things to do on this diet, for me it woulbe be (no.1) to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day and (no.2) find substitutes for coffee and black tea.   water is alkalising.

I did this type of thing a little over a year ago hoping it would help.  While other problems in my body did get better and pains i never knew i had ended up going away, it didn't do anything for the RA. bubbagump2008-02-09 17:12:43I have discovered chicory to replace the tea and coffee. I am surprised that it is quite nice to drink.   I've read that:

QUOTE
Chicory also offers extra health benefits that you wouldn't normally get from your cup of coffee. It is reported to help cleanse the blood and improve the health of your liver.

Why hadn't I discovered chicory earlier.

Anna...this is interesting.  Cider vinegar is also good for GERD(acid reflux)!  I might give that a try.  I do a lot of the stuff that you have said, but prices for good food are outrageous!HI Shelly
Yes, I'd heard the ACV is good for GERD as well.
I just think as far as RA is concerned, everything you read about diet is connected to reducing the acid overload and emphasising the alkaline, including the old tomatoes thing, it's just when people give the diet advice they never mention that all the foods to be cut out are all acid-forming.
Even the lemon drink (if you have the right metabolism) which the APers on this board recommend, is highly alkalising, and also the Epsom Salt baths which I've also read about helps to elminate acids from the pores.
I'll try anything, so if some people swear by ACV, then I'll give that a go.
Anna

Bubba,

What I think happens is enough 'good things' together can help the RA.  Most people stop either because they're not convinced it's working or because they tried too short a window so there're all over the board and then another flare hits and...

Anna is sooo right - so much of this is linked to cell miscommunication and a body 'out of whack' that we need to do more to bring the body more in line so it can function normally.

Even if you don't buy into tiny microbes doing all this damage...how can any of this stuff hurt us on the meds we're on?  And, if over time we can reduce our meds or extend our time on the meds...well, I'm only seeing a bonus here.

Anna - have you seen the research at www.arthritistrust.com about the sulpherated protein combination?  That's another thing that needs to build about 6 months to be effective, but I really think it helps us.  Look under "Essential Fatty Acids are Essential".

Hugs,

Pip
