Something new to consider and confuse?.....

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080125223302.htm
Thank you for that article, Suzanne.  I am going to print it off and take it to my next doctor's appointment to ask some serious questions!

When my rheumy told me that I was severely Vit. D deficient, I was stunned.  I have taken supplements for years which are high in Vit. D, (since I am lactose intolerant and allergic to the sun).  I thought if there was one thing I could feel good about, it was that I was making sure that I had enough Vit. D and calcium.  When I asked him about it, he didn't really have an answer other than it happens.

I am now taking a "heavy-duty" prescription strength Vit. D supplement once a week.  This article sure makes me wonder - "Which came first, the chicken or the egg".
Is this Trevor Marshall of the Marshall protocol? Doesn't this research fit into his own treatment theory? Is there any corroborating evidence or studies? Doesn't this kind of fall into drug companies funding studies about their own meds...hard to see how he could be impartial.

How does his research compare to the world's best known vitamin D researchers ie...M.E. Holick, Robert Heaney and Reinhold Veith

There certainly are a lot of questions to be answered....

Lynn492008-02-11 09:21:05I recently started taking prescription VitD due to a deficincy. I also have B12 deficincy.

I'd be interesting in more information on this subject.

I don't think I can compare it to a drug co., because they make a profit off the drug.  Also, my understanding is that he is a scientist, not an MD, so I can't see that he really profits from people using his protocol - he does not even treat patients, right?

There are other researchers quoted in the article.  And the site itself has nice little video about twins, RA, and genetics, from I believe the great state of MI LOL.

I stand by my opening statement:  something new to CONSIDER and CONFUSE.
Yep, it's Marshall of the MP.

And this is turning 'science' on it's ear - like the islet cells producing insulin again after diabetes starts in Type 1, which for years they said was impossible and the new link to low AC1's and diabetes causing heart attacks.  The exact opposite of what was believed.

I have no stand on the D issue - just from what I've read on his site - the science seems to back him up.  How many of us post we feel better in the summer?  Well, natural D goes up in the summer - IT IS immunosuppressant.

Suzanne - I'm taking this to AF if you haven't already.  Hopefully Susanita can take a gander and do some more research.

Hugs,

Pip
Edited to add an 'm'.
Pip!2008-02-11 12:14:17I didn't post it yet, but was thinking that I wanted Susanita to 'dumb it down' for me LOL.  The way I'm taking the article, it means 'don't supplement' - I didn't really see 'avoid'.  It seems to say 'eat, drink, be sunny' and if you are still low, so be it.  I agree with the statement that even though people have started supplementing like crazy, disease rates continue to go up, not down.

I have reactions to multi suppliments.  There is a Calcium/d pill my doc put me on that has no dairy and i do well with it.

But, every time i read an article on suppliments, it concerns me.  I keep reading that the scientists "believe" it works, but still there hasn't been enough proof in the bodies that calcium etc. even sticks to your system.  For the life of me, vitamin B won't stay no matter how much i take.

I never fully believed in the pills unless they come from natural products that make the vitamin.  Man made has always questioned me.  I try to eat things with added stuff to them, but do my best to find natural food versions as well, and of course D from the sun.
Susanita found more details and posted this link on AF:

I found the parts I could understand to be very interesting!  Especially that food manufacturers are asking the FDA to allow them to add D to foods, just so they can market them as "helps prevent osteoporosis"!
Suzanne -

I went over to AF and started researching from Grandpavan's post.  Look what I found on the Vitamin D Councils' website.

This is a pro-D (duh!) article - yet look at what is/causes/D Hypersensitivity?  Anybody recognize some of the diseases?

Look particularly at paragraphs 6 and 10.  A lot of us ARE hypersensitive and should not be on this supplement.

JMHO

P.S.  If anybody sees Michele before I do, please tell her to look at this thread.

Edited for explantion mark, not a 1.  :-)
Pip!2008-02-12 11:28:52It says 2003 at the bottom?  Is that their current position, five years later?  My, they hold fast to their convictions.  None of the daily research has turned up anything to change any of that, in five years?  I'm surprised.

LOL

OK, I'm searching for 'vitamin D hypersensitivity' and they popped up first.

What's amazing me in what is obviously a pro-D article - they are listing conditions that a lot of us have.  Which, in theory, would make us ineligible for massive dosing as it *could* make us worse.  And we can see why Marshall focused on this.  The Sarc.

I think any of us should insist on the 4 D tests before we take D.

Now, how do I find a complete list of 'vitamin D hypersensitivity' illnesses?

Pip
You could goodsearch or ask Susanita LOL.
If you go to Mercola.com you will find this article.  VERY INFORMATIVE...

Why Vitamin D Supplements Are NOT the Same as Sunlight Thanks Watchingwolf.  Did you see he is referencing the original article of this post?
